Samsung is introducing a new type of OBLYX OLED panels, which are expected to be available in gaming laptops shortly.
Samsung Display has launched OBLYX, its inaugural dedicated OLED brand for gaming laptops, aiming to bolster its presence in one of the PC market’s fastest-growing segments. This announcement was made at Bilibili World 2026 (BW2026) in Shanghai, marking Samsung Display’s first participation in China's largest gaming and anime convention.
Instead of presenting a new display technology, Samsung is developing a distinct identity for its gaming-oriented OLED panels, similar to the established branding seen with processors or graphics cards. This strategy also reflects the company’s ambitions in China, where the demand for OLED-equipped gaming laptops is rapidly increasing, as reported by Digital Today.
Samsung is focusing on branding as OLED gaming laptops gain popularity.
At BW2026, Samsung Display exhibited a variety of devices—including smartphones, gaming laptops, and monitors—featuring its OLED and QD-OLED panels. The highlight of the event was the introduction of the OBLYX brand, which will represent Samsung’s premium OLED displays specifically designed for gaming laptops.
According to Samsung Display, the name OBLYX is inspired by obsidian, a volcanic glass recognized for its deep black color, symbolizing OLED technology’s capability to produce true blacks and nearly infinite contrast. The company intends to offer 14-inch, 16-inch, and 18-inch gaming laptop panels under the OBLYX brand. These screens will support refresh rates of 120Hz, 165Hz, and 240Hz, along with a 0.2ms response time, 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, and OLED's characteristic infinite contrast ratio. Collectively, these specifications are aimed at gamers desiring smoother gameplay, quicker response times, and enhanced visual fidelity for both competitive and cinematic games.
Additionally, Samsung designed its exhibition booth around Tencent’s upcoming Honor of Kings: World, allowing attendees to compare OLED and LCD gaming experiences side by side to showcase the benefits of advanced display technology.
China's flourishing gaming market is propelling Samsung’s new strategy.
The rollout of OBLYX comes as OLED usage increasingly transitions from premium monitors to gaming laptops. Although various notebook manufacturers already offer OLED options, Samsung Display seems to be positioning its panels as a premium platform rather than just another display component.
As reported by Digital Today, China is pivotal to this strategy. Citing market research firm Omdia, Digital Today noted that the gaming OLED laptop market in China saw a compound annual growth rate of 1,449 percent from 2023 to 2025, far exceeding the global growth rate of 405 percent. With an estimated 680 million gamers, China stands as the largest gaming market globally and offers significant opportunities for premium display technologies.
Samsung Display intends to enhance partnerships with PC manufacturers throughout Greater China while also engaging directly with gamers through events like Bilibili World. While consumers may not directly purchase an "OBLYX laptop," the branding could evolve into a recognizable quality indicator, helping buyers identify notebooks featuring Samsung’s latest gaming OLED panels. As gaming laptops increasingly compete based on display quality alongside CPU and GPU performance, Samsung is betting that its panels warrant their own brand.
How is it different from Odyssey?
Samsung’s new OBLYX brand does not replace the Odyssey lineup; instead, they cater to distinct markets. Odyssey is a consumer-facing gaming monitor brand offered by Samsung Electronics, which includes products such as the Odyssey OLED G9.
In contrast, OBLYX is a component brand created by Samsung Display specifically for the OLED panels used inside gaming laptops from various manufacturers, including ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, and others. Through the introduction of OBLYX, Samsung aims to position its OLED panels as a recognizable mark of quality across different brands, similar to Intel Evo or Dolby Vision, rather than restricting the branding to Samsung’s own hardware.
