Following Samsung and Apple, Oppo may be the next company to enter the growing foldable market.
Oppo could disrupt Samsung and Apple’s expansive foldable market
Samsung is reportedly getting ready to launch a shorter and wider foldable device, while Apple's first foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a wide passport-like design. A new leak indicates that Oppo may also be working on a similar model, further increasing the competition in this category.
This information comes from well-known Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, who states that Oppo is developing a wide-screen foldable expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027.
Its battery could be its most significant feature
The Oppo Find N2 was considered a wide foldable during its time. The unnamed foldable is expected to utilize Qualcomm’s unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 6, identified as model number SM8950. The leak also highlights a dedicated AI accelerator designed for processing demanding on-device models. However, the most noteworthy feature may be an impressive battery capacity of about 6,500mAh.
This would be substantial for a foldable device and may necessitate silicon-carbon battery technology to avoid making the phone excessively thick. The source does not specify charging speeds, dimensions, camera details, or confirmed display sizes. In comparison, the Motorola Razr Fold had one of the largest batteries among foldable phones, topping out at 6,000mAh.
This model could be named the Find N7 and, similar to the current Find N6 foldable, it may feature a seamless hinge that reduces the visible crease on the display.
Wide foldables are currently gaining popularity
Wide foldables swap the elongated proportions of models like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 for a shorter, more tablet-like form factor. This design could enhance the experience for movies, games, and more. Huawei has already ventured into this space with the Pura X Max, which boasts a 5.5-inch outer display that unfolds into a 7.6-inch, 16:10 screen. Samsung's upcoming Fold 8 series and Apple's expected foldable device are likely to broaden the appeal of this shape to a wider audience.
