      Meta is apparently experimenting with what could be its most debated wearable innovation. As reported by the Financial Times, the tech giant is currently testing "super sensing" AI glasses in its laboratories. The primary idea behind these glasses is to record all visual and audio information in your environment. However, this plan raises significant privacy concerns since it resembles a device that is constantly listening and watching.

      Meta's ambition appears to be to utilize the data collected from its upcoming smart glasses as a foundation of knowledge, ultimately evolving into a personal agent or assistant. Mark Zuckerberg has previously suggested that this assistant would be available around the clock to help with various tasks, going beyond the capabilities of a typical AI agent that merely responds to queries based on pre-existing knowledge.

      This seems troubling.

      Currently, when someone uses the onboard cameras of Meta’s AI smart glasses to take photos or videos, a white ring light activates to inform others in the camera's view that they are being recorded.

      However, these precautions have not proven completely effective. Shortly after the rollout of Meta's smart glasses, there were multiple reports indicating that the LED indicator could be manipulated, enabling recording without alerting individuals within the camera's range. Meta announced that it will completely disable the camera if the LED indicator is tampered with or obstructed. This adjustment will be implemented through a software update for existing models of Meta’s smart glasses.

      This raises the question: if Meta is indeed designing a super-sensing wearable that continuously records audio and video, will the LED light always be on and visible to everyone captured by the camera?

      According to various sources, "Executives are reportedly planning not to activate the LED when the super-sensing features are in use. This would make it more difficult for bystanders to realize when they are being recorded, potentially heightening privacy issues related to this technology. However, plans might change," the report suggests.

      The plans are in place.

      Significantly, the super sensing feature appears ready for deployment and can be enabled on Meta’s current range of smart glasses via a software update. This concept is indeed controversial, but Meta seems to have a solution in mind.

      One potential implementation option indicates that any data and voice captured by the AI smart glasses will not be available for user download nor shared with Meta. Instead, all metadata derived from audio clips and images would be processed and utilized by Meta AI to respond to user inquiries. The company is also considering using this recorded information to train its own AI models, which is sure to raise privacy concerns.
