Meta has introduced Muse Image, its new image-generation AI model, across Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Users can create images of friends based on public posts, and advertisers will gain access soon. An opt-out option is available.

On Tuesday, Meta launched Muse Image, the first image-generation model developed by the Superintelligence Labs, led by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. The model will be integrated into the Meta AI chatbot and will also feature on Instagram and WhatsApp. Users can generate images from text prompts or modify existing images.

A key feature allows users to generate images of friends or creators using their publicly accessible Instagram posts. Those who prefer not to have their content used or altered by AI can opt-out through the settings menu. Every image produced with Muse Image will contain an invisible watermark, and the system has built-in safety measures to ensure compliance with Meta’s terms of service, including protections against CSAM.

Advertisers will soon be able to utilize this model for developing marketing content. In April, Meta’s Superintelligence Labs launched its first large language model, Muse Spark, and is also working on a video generation model, which is expected to debut in the coming months. Muse Image marks the second major product from this lab, which Wang has led since his hiring a year ago, following Meta's significant investments in AI and recruitment of numerous researchers with lucrative compensation packages exceeding $200 million.

Meta intends to offer its AI models to external developers via a cloud service, facilitating monetization of its data center infrastructure and costly AI chips. This cloud initiative is part of a larger strategy, as reported by Bloomberg last week, that may include offering raw computing power for sale. Despite these plans, Meta continues to seek additional computing resources, having recently signed agreements with CoreWeave, Google, and Oracle. The company also made cuts of 8,000 jobs in May, redirecting billions toward AI infrastructure to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in various AI sectors.
