      Apple's inaugural iPhone Air has made one thing very clear: users appreciate incredibly slim phones — until they begin to fret about battery performance. This trade-off has impacted nearly every ultra-thin smartphone, and it appears Apple is keen to avoid repeating the past.

      A little battery goes a long way

      Recent information from renowned insider Digital Chat Station hints that the upcoming second-generation iPhone Air, anticipated in spring 2027, could come with a 3,500mAh battery. This represents an approximate 11% increase from the current model’s 3,149mAh battery. While this may not seem significant on paper, battery performance is not solely determined by capacity, particularly with iPhones. Apple has spent years enhancing endurance from relatively small batteries through a combination of hardware and software refinements. An 11% increase could feel much larger if the overall design also becomes more efficient. The key question is: how will Apple find the space?

      A bigger battery does not automatically equate to a thicker phone. The company might redesign its internal configuration, utilize a more compact battery, or simply optimize the available space better. There are also rumors that Apple might incorporate Samsung’s new CoE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) OLED technology, which allows for a thinner display stack. If implemented, this could free up space for a slightly larger battery without altering the phone’s dimensions.

      A balancing act gets even trickier

      Battery enhancements aren't the only speculated improvement. Multiple reports indicate that Apple is likely planning to add a second rear camera to the iPhone Air, probably an ultra-wide sensor. This would mark a significant change since the current model's single-camera setup has often been seen as its major drawback, especially when compared to the standard iPhone. However, fitting another camera into an already tight space is more complicated than simply adding another sensor. Each additional component competes for limited internal space, making the prospect of fitting a larger battery even more impressive — if Apple can manage it.

      The timing may also work to Apple's advantage. The rumored A20 chip, expected to be produced using a 2nm manufacturing process, should provide improved power efficiency compared to earlier models. When combined with a larger battery, the iPhone Air 2 could deliver noticeably better battery life without compromising the ultra-slim design that characterizes the series. The iPhone Air 2 is still anticipated to launch in the first half of 2027, alongside the typical iPhone 18 and the more budget-friendly iPhone 18e. If these rumors hold true, Apple may finally demonstrate that slim phones don't always have to come with battery limitations.
