Claude Fable 5 is departing from subscriptions, though it may not be a permanent decision.

High demand is temporarily removing Claude Fable 5 from subscription access for now.

Anthropic's most advanced publicly available model, Claude, will cease standard subscription access after July 7, but the company is attempting to alleviate concerns that this change is permanent.

Fable 5 made a recent return to Claude following scrutiny from the U.S. government. Anthropic stated that it would be available on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans for up to 50% of weekly usage limits until July 7. After that date, users will need to transition to usage-credit billing for access beyond their regular plan limits.

This change has sparked concerns regarding whether Fable 5 will permanently become a paid add-on. A lead engineer from Claude Code has clarified that Anthropic does not plan to make Fable 5 a permanent paid feature.

Fable 5 is expected to return to subscriptions.

In a post on X, the engineer mentioned that Anthropic is aware of the inquiries regarding Fable's availability in subscription plans. Although Fable 5 will no longer be part of subscriptions after July 7, Anthropic intends to reintegrate it into standard subscriptions "as soon as capacity permits."

This aligns with earlier statements from Anthropic. In its original blog post, the company indicated that demand for Fable 5 was likely to be "very high and difficult to predict," prompting a cautious approach to subscription access.

Demand is indeed the primary issue.

The shift to usage-credit billing may disappoint subscribers, but it was anticipated. Anthropic has experienced sustained demand for Claude, and the popularity of Fable 5 has further complicated management.

A few months ago, the company revealed a partnership with SpaceX to utilize the entire computing capacity of the Colossus 1 data center, adding more than 300 megawatts of power and over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs.

This increased capacity has already led to noticeable changes within Claude. Anthropic has doubled the five-hour rate limits for Claude Code, eliminated peak-hour limit reductions for Claude Code on Pro and Max accounts, and expanded API rate limits.

Despite this additional capacity, Anthropic seems to struggle with the demand for Fable 5. Subscribers can only hope the company follows through on its promise to return the model to standard subscription plans when capacity allows. Until then, those wanting continued access after July 7 must switch to usage-credit billing.
