Amazon has discreetly enhanced its Fire HD 10 tablet by adding an impressive 1GB of RAM.
Amazon has subtly updated one of its most sought-after tablets, but not in the way many anticipated. Instead of releasing an entirely new Fire tablet after its longest absence in years, the company has rolled out a slightly enhanced version of the existing Fire HD 10, now featuring an additional gigabyte of RAM.
This update may seem modest on paper, but it comes at an intriguing moment. Amazon hasn't launched a new Fire tablet since refreshing the Fire HD 8 in 2024, while models like the Fire 7 and Fire Max 11 are still awaiting successors. Rather than broadening its portfolio, Amazon seems to be prolonging the life of an older device with a minor hardware upgrade.
A minor enhancement that could signal larger supply or strategic shifts
The updated Fire HD 10 now offers 4GB of RAM, an upgrade from the 3GB found in the 2023 version. However, there is a limitation. The enhanced memory is currently offered only on the 32GB storage model available in black with lock screen ads activated. Consumers opting for the 64GB storage option, various color choices, or an ad-free experience will still be restricted to the previous 3GB RAM model. Additionally, Amazon has raised the price by $15, with the new configuration priced at $154.99 rather than $139.99.
Aside from the RAM increase, everything else remains unchanged. The tablet still features a 10.1-inch Full HD display, a 2GHz octa-core processor, a claimed battery life of 13 hours, microSD support, USB-C charging, and runs Fire OS software. For tasks like streaming, browsing, reading, and casual gaming, the extra RAM should enhance multitasking and app switching, though users shouldn’t expect significantly improved performance.

The unusual timing of this refresh has led to speculation regarding Amazon’s overall tablet strategy. One theory suggests the company is facing challenges with shifting memory supply chains. Demand for DRAM has surged across the industry as AI infrastructure and data centers require larger quantities of memory chips, impacting availability in various sectors. Similar supply issues have already affected hardware choices throughout the industry.
Another, simpler explanation might be at play here. Until now, Amazon's more affordable Fire HD 8 could be configured with 4GB of RAM, while the flagship Fire HD 10 was capped at 3GB, creating a peculiar disparity within the lineup. This update finally aligns the larger tablet’s memory configuration more closely with its premium status.
Regardless, this update does not resolve the more pressing questions regarding Amazon’s tablet division.
The company had established a reputation for annually rolling out refreshed Fire tablets, gradually enhancing displays, processors, battery longevity, and software capabilities. That momentum has significantly diminished. Instead of debuting a next-gen Fire HD 10 or launching a successor to the Fire Max 11, Amazon has chosen to implement what is, in effect, a specification adjustment.
For current Fire HD 10 users, the added gigabyte of RAM isn't compelling enough to warrant an upgrade. However, for new consumers in search of an affordable entertainment tablet, the revamped model presents slightly better value, even if it feels more like a temporary solution than a new chapter in Amazon’s tablet evolution.
