Spotless, friendly, and completely misleading. AI summaries are concealing the reviews that truly count.

Planning a trip can be quite stressful without worrying whether the positive hotel summary you just read was generated by an AI that ignored the troubling aspects. In fact, this might precisely be the case on TripAdvisor.

An investigation by the consumer group Which?, reported by the Guardian, indicates that TripAdvisor’s AI-generated review summaries are glossing over serious guest complaints, including some that could be quite dangerous.

Can you really trust an AI summary of your hotel reviews?

For instance, consider the Riu Palace Santa Maria in Cape Verde. The AI summary described it as immaculate, highlighting various restaurants with outstanding reviews. In contrast, actual guests reported experiences like being served undercooked chicken, flies and birds buzzing around the buffet, and even dead mice near the seating area.

Currently, the hotel chain is facing a lawsuit in the High Court from hundreds of guests alleging illnesses tied to hygiene issues. None of this is evident from the overly positive AI-generated summary, which has now been removed.

If you thought that was concerning, there's more to the story. A hotel in Turkey received reports of guests facing repeated sexual harassment from male staff. Yet, the AI summary characterized the service as friendly, with only minor flaws.

If someone relied on the AI’s overview of user reviews to book that hotel, they would have no idea of the distressing experiences awaiting them. Numerous other similar cases were uncovered during the investigation.

Why does AI tend to downplay negative reviews?

Duncan Brumby, a professor of human-computer interaction at UCL, provided a straightforward explanation. AI models often soften harsh criticism because most of their training data consists of mild and polite remarks. Thus, when a guest writes a negative review, the AI might interpret it as a minor issue instead.

TripAdvisor stated that it is examining the discrepancies in summaries and that its systems minimize AI overviews when reviews refer to serious safety incidents. Moreover, they assert that these summaries were never intended to substitute actual reviews.

Ultimately, the message is clear. Don’t let AI summaries dictate your travel choices. Bypass them, read the one-star reviews, and consult other websites as well. AI summaries have consistently demonstrated significant inconsistencies, so conducting your own research is advisable, to prevent your vacation from turning into a nightmare.

Intel may revive older desktop CPUs due to rising DDR5 costs

Older Intel Core CPUs from the 10th to 14th Generation might see a resurgence.

Intel may be gearing up for a surprising reaction to the ongoing memory crunch. According to the Chinese source ITHome, referencing ChannelGate, the company's latest production plan involves restarting the manufacturing of 13th and 14th-generation Core processors. This change is anticipated to enhance the availability of Intel’s 10th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Generation CPU families, particularly in mainland China. For DIY PC builders, the timing is crucial, as DDR5 memory prices have surged, making new platforms less justifiable for those trying to construct an affordable gaming PC.

Opera’s new Paste Protect feature prevents clipboard attacks that antivirus software can’t detect

ClickFix attacks trick users into compromising their own devices, and until now, no major browser offered a built-in defense against them.

Most online scams are relatively easy to recognize once you know the signs—like fake login pages, dubious attachments, or urgent money transfer requests. However, ClickFix does not resemble any of these. It positions itself as a helpful solution and prompts users to perform such a routine action that few think twice about it. According to cybersecurity firm Huntress, this technique was responsible for more than 53 percent of malware loader incidents last year, and until now, no major browser had a native safeguard against it. Opera is addressing this issue with a new feature called Paste Protect.
