      Flipper Devices has established itself among hackers and hardware fans with the Flipper Zero, a compact device that can engage with RFID, NFC, Bluetooth, and various other wireless protocols. Now, the London-based firm is adopting a different direction.

      Its newest product, the Busy Bar, is a desktop productivity display designed to assist users in maintaining focus, indicating their availability, and automating aspects of their workflow. After being previewed last year, the device will finally be available for purchase on July 14. While the idea is genuinely innovative, its initial price of up to $249 may cause potential buyers to hesitate.

      A premium-priced smart desk companion

      At first glance, the Busy Bar resembles an old-fashioned digital desk clock. It features a 72×16 LED matrix display capable of showcasing 16 million colors with a brightness of up to 400 nits, and includes an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust visibility.

      The display can exhibit custom messages like “Busy,” “On a Call,” or “Do Not Disturb,” along with timers, widgets, and animations. It also incorporates Pomodoro-style focus sessions, which can be beneficial for remote workers and students seeking to reduce distractions.

      The hardware is impressively feature-packed. It comes with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, a 3,250mAh battery that offers up to 8 hours of active use or 2 weeks on standby, and fast charging that takes around an hour with a 15W adapter. Additionally, there’s a secondary monochrome display on the back to provide battery, connectivity, and timer details, as well as a built-in speaker for alerts and notifications.

      The Busy Bar is compatible with iOS, Android, and macOS, with Windows support expected soon. Users can block distracting applications while focus timers are active, automatically show “On Call” status during macOS meetings, and mute notifications when recording or streaming.

      Due to Matter certification, the device can also activate smart home automations across the Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa platforms. Developers have the option to delve deeper into customization using Flipper’s open firmware, HTTP API, MQTT support, and official Python and TypeScript libraries.       Early adopters on the waitlist can purchase it for $179. Following that, the first 3,000 buyers will pay $199, after which the retail price will rise to $249.

      This pricing places the Busy Bar in the same range as tablets, smart displays, and even entry-level smartphones that can accomplish similar productivity tasks.
