This $249 LED sign aims to improve your work-life balance.
Flipper Devices has established a reputation among hackers and hardware fans with the Flipper Zero, a compact device that can interact with RFID, NFC, Bluetooth, and various wireless protocols. Now, the London-based company is exploring a different direction.
Its newest product, the Busy Bar, is a desktop productivity display aimed at helping users maintain focus, indicate their availability, and automate aspects of their workflow. Following a teaser last year, the device is set to be released for purchase on July 14. Although the concept is quite innovative, its starting price of up to $249 may deter some potential buyers.
A sophisticated desk companion with a high price point
At first sight, the Busy Bar resembles a vintage digital desk clock. It features a 72×16 LED matrix display that can produce 16 million colors and boasts a brightness level of up to 400 nits, along with an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts visibility.
The display can show custom messages like “Busy,” “On a Call,” or “Do Not Disturb,” in addition to timers, widgets, and animations. It supports Pomodoro-style focus sessions, making it useful for remote workers and students looking to reduce distractions.
The hardware is surprisingly comprehensive. It includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, a 3,250mAh battery that offers up to 8 hours of active use or 2 weeks on standby, and fast charging that takes about an hour using a 15W adapter. There’s also a secondary monochrome display on the back to show battery status, connectivity, and timer details, plus a built-in speaker for alerts and notifications.
The Busy Bar integrates with iOS, Android, and macOS, with Windows compatibility planned for the future. Users can block distracting apps while focus timers are active, automatically set “On Call” status during meetings on macOS, and silence notifications when recording or streaming.
Thanks to its Matter certification, the device can trigger smart home automations within the Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa ecosystems. Developers can further enhance its capabilities using Flipper’s open firmware, HTTP API, MQTT support, and official Python and TypeScript libraries. This makes the Busy Bar much more than just an illuminated LED sign.
The challenge is its cost
Early adopters who join the waitlist can purchase it for $179. Afterward, the first 3,000 customers will pay $199 before the price rises to $249.
This pricing places the Busy Bar in the same range as tablets, smart displays, and even entry-level smartphones that can handle many similar productivity tasks.
The Busy Bar is certainly one of the more intriguing productivity gadgets revealed this year. Its combination of hardware features, smart home integration, and developer-centric software makes it genuinely appealing to remote workers and tech enthusiasts.
However, whether this experience justifies the $249 price tag is another matter altogether. The concept is appealing, but convincing average consumers to invest that much in a dedicated productivity display may prove to be quite challenging.
