The Minimal Phone 2 appears to be a purposeful response to doomscrolling.
The Minimal Phone 2 has entered waitlist mode with a clear commitment. Minimal indicates that its upcoming phone will feature a smaller, refined design, an improved keyboard, an aluminum body, and enhanced software.
The initial Minimal Phone gauged demand for an Android device that helps reduce phone usage without eliminating everyday tools. Its e-paper display and physical keyboard made constant scrolling less appealing while maintaining access to apps, messaging, payments, and other essentials.
Why the original phone succeeded
The original Minimal Phone combined Android 14 with a 4.3-inch e-paper touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard. It also offered Google Play access, NFC payments, wireless charging, dual SIM capability, expandable storage, a headphone jack, and USB-C.
This combination provided greater versatility than a standard feature phone, but early reviews highlighted the challenges of creating a more calming smartphone experience. The first model had to contend with a plastic construction, camera limitations, e-paper ghosting, software roughness, and a lack of 5G support.
The second generation is being designed with a focus on the aspects that required improvement. A metal body, a more compact shape, an updated keyboard, and refined software could enhance the overall experience without transforming it into merely another app-driven device.
Can the sequel provide enough improvements?
The critical challenge is trust. A phone designed to minimize distractions won't be effective if users have a second smartphone nearby for photos, efficient apps, or basic dependability.
Minimal has yet to disclose the complete specifications, leaving several key questions unanswered. It hasn’t clarified whether the Minimal Phone 2 will maintain the e-paper screen, operate on Android, support Google Play, include 5G, or modify the camera system.
Armen Youssefian's insights are noteworthy due to his public company connections and involvement in the original crowdfunding campaign for The Minimal Company and the first Minimal Phone. However, the teaser will only go so far until Minimal unveils the hardware and provides additional information.
Should you consider joining the waitlist?
At this stage, the waitlist is the only substantial action available. Minimal states that those who sign up will receive updates and early bird discount access, but it has not disclosed pricing, launch dates, shipping details, regions, or full specifications.
Sign up if the concept resonates with your feelings of phone fatigue, but hold off on viewing the Minimal Phone 2 as a true alternative until the company confirms details about the screen, software, network capabilities, camera, price, and launch timeframe.
