Google begins testing Gmail Live, its new voice search feature for your inbox.
The feature allows you to inquire about your inbox using voice commands and is scheduled to launch later this summer.
At this year’s I/O event, Google introduced Gmail Live, a new feature powered by Gemini that enables users to search their inbox vocally instead of typing. It has entered the testing phase, with 9to5Google reporting its rollout to a limited group of Android and iOS users this week.
How Gmail Live operates
This feature adds a small Live icon to the Gmail search bar. Clicking it opens a full-screen voice interface that presents users with suggested prompts, such as “What are the updates on my latest orders?” and “What are my upcoming travel dates?”
Once the user begins speaking, a blue light appears along the edge of the screen while the voice query is transcribed in real time. Gmail Live then processes the question and audibly reads the answer, which also displays on the screen next to the original email, helping users verify the information.
The voice interface has two buttons at the bottom, allowing users to mute their microphone or exit Gmail Live to return to their inbox.
Part of Google’s larger push for voice technology
Gmail Live is part of an expanding array of voice-driven AI features across Google’s applications and services. It follows Gemini Live, allowing users to engage in natural, real-time conversations with Google’s AI assistant and perform tasks like setting reminders or creating calendar events. Earlier this year, Search Live introduced a similar two-way voice experience in Google Search’s AI Mode, enabling users to ask follow-up questions and receive spoken answers along with links to relevant websites.
Gmail Live is expected to be available for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers later this summer after the testing phase concludes. Google intends to implement similar capabilities into Docs and Keep, extending the voice-first functionality to document drafting and note-taking while on the move.
