Instagram is experimenting with a simpler method for adjusting recommendations.
A Reels shortcut is currently being tested to enhance access to Instagram’s Your Algorithm tool.
We’ve all experienced an Instagram feed going off course. A random Reel grabs your attention for a brief moment, and soon enough, the app is inundating you with similar content repeatedly.
Instagram has an existing solution to address some of these issues through Your Algorithm, which allows users to modify the topics that influence their recommendations. Now, the platform aims to make this tool more readily available while users engage with the app.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri has shared details about new shortcut features that may position Your Algorithm closer to the main feed and Reels. These modifications could streamline the process of correcting redundant recommendations, introducing new topics, or reshaping a feed without the need to access settings.
Instagram is seeking to bring algorithm controls nearer to the feed.
Since last year, Instagram has focused on enhancing users’ algorithms and providing more control over their recommendations. Recently, it expanded these options to the main feed, allowing individuals to view and modify the topics Instagram believes they are interested in.
Mosseri’s preview highlights how Instagram might bring these controls nearer to where recommendations are visible. One prototype allows users to pull down on the main feed to access Your Algorithm, while another shows the same option appearing after swiping up from a Reel.
The platform is also testing buttons beneath Reels, enabling users to express whether they wish to see more videos similar to the one currently being watched. This functionality could facilitate on-the-spot adjustment of recommendations, enabling users to refine the algorithm in real-time as they browse rather than waiting to access settings later.
A chatbot-like approach to modifying your feed.
Your Algorithm could evolve into a more proactive tool for altering feed content. Users wouldn’t need to depend solely on likes, pauses, searches, and viewing times to influence recommendations over time.
Mosseri’s preview indicates that users might have the option to type their preferences for content they want to see more frequently, such as positive posts, fitness videos, travel clips, or recipe ideas. Instagram would then suggest related topics that users can select and incorporate into their feed.
This feature could assist users in remedying recommendations skewed by accidental interactions, diversify interests, and revitalize a feed that has become overly repetitive.
