Your Windows 10 computer has received an additional year of security updates; here's how to obtain them at no cost.
Free security updates for Windows 10 will continue until 2027, with three straightforward enrollment options available.
For those still using Windows 10, Microsoft has granted an extension for its free Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumer devices, moving the new deadline to October 12, 2027.
Interestingly, this update wasn’t accompanied by a significant announcement. Microsoft simply revised its ESU support page and added a note to an existing blog post.
Here's how to access free Windows 10 security updates through 2027:
If you are already enrolled in ESU, your coverage will automatically adjust to the new end date in 2027, so there’s no additional action needed. If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time, as Microsoft has kept three enrollment options available:
1. Back up your PC settings to a Microsoft account.
2. Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
3. Pay a one-time fee of $30.
Residents in the European Economic Area can get this for free simply by signing into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account. One license covers up to 10 devices linked to that account.
It's important to note that this applies only to personal devices. Business computers connected to Active Directory or managed through mobile device management software do not qualify, except for devices registered through Microsoft Entra. Companies have a separate paid ESU option that extends to 2028.
Why is this update significant now?
A large portion of the Windows user base still does not meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, leaving many PCs on the older version. Additionally, numerous users prefer Windows 10 for its simpler interface and absence of built-in AI features and telemetry.
This announcement coincides with Microsoft increasing Xbox console prices and Apple raising costs on its leading products. For now, you have an additional year to decide your next steps without losing security support.

If you miss the texture of paper in our digital world, this app can give your Mac’s display a tactile feel.
A paper-like screen overlay can make extended work sessions more comfortable.
Most screen comfort tools adjust color temperature; Apple’s Night Shift, for instance, warms up the screen and often gives it an orange hue. Paperman is a unique alternative that applies a subtle paper-like texture over the screen.
The app is available for both Mac and Windows, and it aims to mimic the look of paper, matte glass, or an e-ink display. It softens the stark contrast and diminishes the glossy appearance of modern screens during lengthy reading or writing tasks.

Apple’s most substantial MacBook Pro redesign in years may forgo the anticipated chip.
The upcoming MacBook Pro is slated for release later this year, but according to Bloomberg, it won’t feature a next-gen processor. Instead, it is expected to include Pro and Max variants of the currently available M5 silicon.
There was considerable speculation that the redesigned MacBook with OLED display and touch support would coincide with the launch of the M6 series processors; however, it seems Apple has made notable changes to its silicon strategy.
