      Claude outperformed human fundraisers, but there is a significant caveat.

      The study compared commercial AI models to skilled fundraisers from the charity Save the Children. Over more than 1,000 conversations, Claude Opus 4.6 was nearly three times more effective in persuading participants to donate a part of their study bonuses, and the donations were, on average, 13% larger than those collected by human fundraisers. These results stem from a preprint paper that has yet to be peer-reviewed.

      The study also assessed debate performance, showing that Claude and other leading models excelled over top competitive debaters by 4.6 percentage points. However, this advantage largely vanished when researchers restricted the AI systems to using a similar word count as their human peers. This suggests that the AI's success was due to verbosity and the swift presentation of extensive information rather than inherently superior reasoning abilities.

      The researchers observed that the chatbots often generated messages several times longer than those created by professionals, filled with factual claims and expert references. They cautioned that persuasive effectiveness does not necessarily equal accuracy, noting that some models produced convincing but unverified or fabricated information.

      The concerning aspect isn’t just fundraising; it’s what may come next.

      Interestingly, the researchers warn against overly hasty conclusions. The experiments relied entirely on written conversations, with participants engaging in lengthy 15 to 20-minute discussions that may not accurately reflect real-world behavior. Additionally, they did not explore scenarios in which humans and AI collaborate, which is arguably a more realistic future working model.

      Nonetheless, the findings emphasize an emerging reality: AI models are becoming increasingly adept at persuasion. If they can persuade people to donate more effectively than trained professionals today, they may also be equally proficient at swaying purchasing decisions, political views, or public discussion in the future. While this holds promise for productivity, it highlights the urgent need for transparency and safeguards regarding AI-generated communication.
