Every single slide of your Instagram photo dump now comes with a caption.
One toggle, up to 20 captions, and at last, a reason to write something for every slide.
Instagram has made one of its most popular post formats significantly more functional.
Beginning today, you can assign a distinct caption to each slide in a carousel post. Rather than trying to convey the meaning of up to 20 different photos with a single caption, each slide now has its own text below it. This change makes me curious as to why it took so long to be implemented.
Photo dumps just got an upgrade 📸now you can assign different captions to each slide of a carousel ↙️ 1.create a carousel post 2.tap the caption area 3.toggle on “multiple captions” 4.write a unique caption for each slide— Instagram (@instagram) June 18, 2026
So, how does the new Instagram caption feature function?
When you create a new carousel post, you will now notice a toggle to choose between a single caption for the entire post (as it has been previously) or separate captions for each slide.
Once you activate this feature, you can create a distinct caption for each photo or video. As your followers swipe through the carousel, they will see each caption displayed below the corresponding slide.
The feature accommodates up to 20 slides with 20 unique captions, consistent with the current limit of the carousel.
Why does this matter beyond photo dumps?
While this feature will undoubtedly assist casual users, it will also benefit content creators by allowing them to transform a single carousel into a micro-blog.
You can guide your followers through a step-by-step tutorial, highlight multiple products with individual descriptions, or provide context that aligns with each image.
Additionally, there's a significant improvement in accessibility. Users who utilize screen readers and other assistive technologies will now experience the same narrative flow as sighted users.
Instagram states this feature went live at 9 AM PT today. Given that the platform has over 2 billion users globally, it may take up to a week for the feature to appear on your account.
