Every single slide of your Instagram photo dumps now has a caption.
One toggle, up to 20 captions, and finally, a reason to write something for each slide.
Instagram has significantly enhanced one of its most popular post formats.
Starting today, users can assign a unique caption to each slide in a carousel post. Rather than relying on a single caption to describe up to 20 different images, each slide can now have its own accompanying text. This addition raises the question of why it took so long to implement.
Photo dumps just got an upgrade 📸 now you can add different captions for every slide in a carousel ↙️ 1.create a carousel post 2.tap the caption area 3.toggle on “multiple captions” 4.write a unique caption for each slide— Instagram (@instagram) June 18, 2026
So how does the new Instagram caption feature actually work?
When you are creating a new carousel post, you will find a toggle that allows you to switch between a single caption for the entire post (as it has been until now) or individual captions for each slide.
Once you activate this feature, you can write a distinct caption for every photo or video. As your followers scroll through the carousel, they will see each caption displayed below the respective slide.
The feature accommodates up to 20 slides with 20 unique captions, aligning with the current slide limit of the carousel.
Why is this important beyond just photo dumps?
Although this feature will certainly enhance casual postings, it will also be advantageous for content creators. It enables them to convert a single carousel into a micro-blog.
You can guide your followers through a step-by-step tutorial, highlight several products with individual descriptions or details, or provide context relevant to each image.
Additionally, there is a significant accessibility enhancement here. Users who depend on screen readers and other assistive technologies will receive the same narrative flow as sighted users.
Instagram announced that the feature went live at 9 AM PT today. Given that the platform has over 2 billion users globally, it might take up to a week for it to appear on your account.
