The 2027 Taycan by Porsche features virtual E-Shift gears connected to genuine paddle shifters.
Porsche is addressing a major EV hardware challenge using software.
While electric performance vehicles have become very fast, particularly for straight-line acceleration, they still have difficulty providing the engaging experience typical of conventional sports cars. Elements like gear changes, revving sensations, and tactile feedback that give a sports car its lively character are often lacking.
Porsche believes it can remedy this with software, and the 2027 Taycan update represents its most significant effort to date. This model is equipped with a feature called E-Shift, a system that introduces eight virtual gears that can be controlled using paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel.
How does the Taycan’s E-Shift system function?
Each virtual gear has distinct power delivery characteristics, akin to traditional sports cars, with lower gears offering a more aggressive feel while higher gears focus on smoothness and speed.
When shifting, the vehicle momentarily alters its power output to simulate the sensation of a gear change, accompanied by a discernible jolt, which Porsche refers to as a shift jerk.
This system is also supplemented by a virtual tachometer, gear indicator, and shift lights within the instrument cluster. The Porsche Electric Sport Sound enhances the experience by adjusting in real-time to match throttle input and simulated engine speed.
What additional features does the 2027 Porsche Taycan include?
Drivers can choose to operate the Taycan manually using the paddle shifters or disable the E-Shift system for a conventional full-EV experience. The Taycan Turbo GT includes E-Shift as standard, while other variants can opt for it.
In addition to E-Shift, buyers can now order the Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach Package, which can be fitted with a Manthey Kit directly from the factory, marking the first time Porsche has made this option available on an EV.
Software updates can also be downloaded and installed without needing to visit a dealership. The main display features a rotating 3D model of the car, showcasing its actual exterior color and customizable widgets that can be arranged like a home screen. Navigation has been upgraded to include 3D building models and a more intelligent charging planner for longer journeys.

BYD has introduced the Great Tang eSUV, which boasts a 10-minute charging time and a range of 590 miles starting at $40,000. This impressive electric SUV offers the same range as many gasoline vehicles, requiring only a slightly longer time to recharge. The flagship eSUV from BYD is priced around $35,500, providing stiff competition for most American electric SUVs.
BMW is starting to take orders for the i3 well ahead of its projected timeline due to an overwhelming demand for the vehicle. Originally planned for this fall, the company has decided to open order books sooner because they feel it would be inconsiderate to keep potential buyers waiting.
China is set to implement new EV safety regulations, and the U.S. may benefit from following suit. These regulations will require manufacturers to ensure their vehicles can safely fail rather than just alerting users about potential issues. Beginning July 1, 2026, two national standards will mandate enhanced battery safety measures and an accessible, one-touch method to cut high-voltage power during emergencies. These regulations address critical aspects such as battery fires, crash impacts, smoke exposure, and rescue access following severe incidents.
