Roblox now provides age-specific accounts for children, along with enhanced parental control features.
Roblox has officially launched Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts globally, following a limited pilot program last month in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
These accounts are specifically designed for users under the age of 16, with a focus on adapting child safety measures as children grow.
Understanding how Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts function for your child
The two account types cater to different age groups. Roblox Kids is for ages 5 to 8 and includes the platform’s most stringent default settings. Children with this type of account can only access games labeled with Minimal or Mild content maturity that have been vetted through Roblox’s ongoing selection process. In this account, chat features are disabled by default.
Roblox Select is intended for ages 9 to 15 and allows access to Moderately rated games, with chat settings that vary based on age and region. Both account types exclude games that touch on sensitive topics, social hangouts, and freeform drawing tools.
Games must also meet stricter entry requirements, including developer ID verification, two-factor authentication, and either a Roblox subscription or a refundable publishing fee. As children age, their accounts will automatically transition from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age 9, and then to a standard account at age 16.
How Roblox’s updated parental controls enhance your child's safety
With this rollout, parental controls have been expanded as well. Parents who connect their account to their child’s can oversee gameplay activity and friend lists, manage content ratings, set screen time limits, and control spending.
New features include detailed game blocking, direct chat management that lasts until the child turns 16, and a game approval system that allows parents to grant access to specific titles outside the standard catalog.
Roblox also becomes the first major gaming platform to mandate facial age checks for chat functionality. Users bypassing age verification will be unable to access chat, regardless of their actual age. Additionally, Roblox plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition framework for content ratings later this year.
