Anthropic halts Fable 5 and Mythos 5 following US government order

Anthropic continues to face challenges from the US government. The company has been instructed to disable access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals, including foreign employees of Anthropic based in the United States.

On June 12, Anthropic received this directive and is deactivating the two models for all users in order to comply. Other models offered by Anthropic remain unaffected. The government has not publicly detailed the specific national security issues at hand, but Anthropic believes the order relates to a reported method for bypassing or jailbreaking the safeguards in Fable 5.

Another conflict following the Pentagon dispute

This isn’t the first major confrontation Anthropic has had with the US government. Earlier this year, the company was involved in a dispute with the Pentagon after it declined to lift restrictions that barred Claude from being used for fully autonomous weapon systems and large-scale domestic surveillance. This disagreement led to allegations of blacklisting and legal action, placing Anthropic’s safety-first stance at odds with certain sectors of the US government.

The latest government directive puts Anthropic in a situation it is familiar with. Officials are concerned about the access to potent AI systems, while Anthropic contends that its safety measures are being misunderstood or held to an unrealistic standard.

      Why Fable 5 raised concerns

The worry surrounding Fable 5 is connected to the advanced cybersecurity features of Mythos 5. Anthropic has stated that Mythos-class models are capable of identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities, and Mythos 5 was reportedly tested by the NSA and other government-affiliated evaluators prior to its broader release. Although these capabilities can assist security teams in pinpointing and rectifying weaknesses, they also present national security risks if utilized for offensive or harmful purposes.

Fable 5 was just recently launched as a public version of Mythos 5 with enhanced safeguards. Anthropic indicated that it was designed to block or redirect sensitive queries related to cybersecurity and biology to Opus 4.8.

Anthropic claims that the reported bypass only exposed minor, known vulnerabilities and that other public models can perform similarly. Nonetheless, given the sensitivity surrounding cybersecurity, exercising caution is reasonable. If Mythos 5 can effectively identify software vulnerabilities, its safeguards must be exceptionally robust. Although Anthropic may argue that the reported jailbreak was minimal, the government's concerns this time are more comprehensible. In this instance, the government’s stance of “better safe than sorry” might be its most justifiable position.

Apple makes Liquid Glass adjustable, highlighting its significance

The new slider feature is beneficial, welcome, and somewhat amusing after a year of Apple suggesting that transparency in design was the obvious future.

Apple’s vision for a glassy software experience now includes a way to reduce the glassy effect. In iOS 27, users can modify the translucency of the Liquid Glass effect, while macOS Golden Gate introduces its own Liquid Glass controls within System Settings. Liquid Glass remains present across Apple’s platforms, continuing to shimmer through menus and panels and maintaining the elegant UI design that Apple favors. This bold design choice has now received a dimmer switch. After a year of promoting translucency as the clear next step, the most revealing design update from WWDC might be the one that allows users to tone it down.

Brazil’s hidden World Cup strategy taught the team when to disregard data

The data indicated he wasn't running enough, but the footage showed he was always in the “ideal tactical position.”

Brazil, with five World Cup titles—the most of any country—hasn't added to its tally in five consecutive tournaments. This time, the team is relying heavily on data. Each player wears a sensor-laden "smart vest" that tracks their position on the field (via GPS), heart rate, and a metric known as "player load," similar to the stats provided by devices like Whoop bands or Apple Watches, but specifically tailored for soccer.
