      At the recent WWDC event, Apple highlighted the improvements made to Siri. The assistant has become more intelligent, conversational, and useful across various applications. However, the company aims to ensure that Siri does not evolve into a true companion. In a conversation with Mostly Human, Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, and Greg Joswiak, the marketing chief, discussed the company's AI strategy, including Siri's role in an environment filled with chatbots.

      Establishing boundaries for Siri

      When asked if users could create an AI partner using Siri, Federighi firmly replied no. While this question might appear harmless and entertaining initially, the answer is significant, particularly in today’s AI landscape. Many AI products are leaning towards fostering companionship, emotional reliance, and lengthy interactions designed to keep users engaged. Conversely, Apple is trying to maintain clearer boundaries around Siri.

      The Siri AI has transformed into a more capable assistant. It no longer struggles with basic follow-up questions. At the WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled Siri AI, a redesigned version of the assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. This assistant can grasp personal context, respond to queries about on-screen content, search through messages, emails, photos, and more, and leverage broader web knowledge for timely answers. There is also a new dedicated Siri app that enables users to revisit previous conversations across Apple devices.

      On iPhones, Siri AI can be activated via the side button, “Hey Siri,” or by swiping down from the Dynamic Island. On Macs and iPads, Apple integrates Siri AI with Spotlight and context menus, potentially enhancing its usefulness for managing files, images, text, and documents.

      Focus on utility, not dependency

      Joswiak mentioned that Apple does not intend for users to become “prompt experts” to utilize AI—this aligns with Apple’s brand philosophy. The company has always aimed for a seamless and user-friendly experience, and Siri may benefit from this approach. If executed correctly, Apple users could begin posing more uniquely specific questions to the assistant. The limitation currently is availability; Apple has indicated that Siri AI functionalities are accessible for developer testing across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27, with a beta for users expected later this year for supported devices set to English. Currently, China is excluded, and iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch users in the EU will also have to wait.
