Google DeepMind's TacticAI is capable of forecasting football plays 8 seconds in advance. Palmeiras is the first to implement this technology.
Google's TacticAI forecasts football plays eight seconds in advance, with Liverpool experts favoring its tactics 90% of the time. Palmeiras has become the first club to implement it for live play analysis.
Developed by Google DeepMind, TacticAI utilizes geometric deep learning to analyze player movements, predict game dynamics, and suggest tactical changes based on broadcast-style visual data. The system was initially created in collaboration with Liverpool FC and validated through a qualitative study involving the club's football experts, who found TacticAI's tactical suggestions preferable 90% of the time. Research published in Nature Communications indicated that TacticAI also surpassed existing models in correctly predicting corner kick receivers and whether a shot would ensue.
The partnership with Palmeiras, unveiled at a Google event in Brazil on June 10, represents a notable advancement. Previously, TacticAI was limited to analyzing set pieces, particularly corner kicks, but now it is being used for dynamic open play. Palmeiras' data science team employs a drag-and-drop interface to adjust player positions and examine how these changes influence team and opponent behaviors.
This capability allows coaches to query scenarios, such as the implications of advancing a left back by five meters. TacticAI then simulates the resulting effects on the entire defensive setup, quantifying tactical choices that previously relied on intuition. Google has also collaborated with Brazil's football confederation CBF to leverage AI for World Cup preparation.
The technology behind TacticAI has broader applications beyond sports, as predicting coordinated movements from visual data parallels challenges faced by autonomous robotics, traffic management, and logistics planning. TacticAI's geometric deep learning framework, which views players as nodes within a dynamic graph and models their spatial interplay, aligns more closely with physical AI systems than with traditional language models.
Football has lagged behind other sports in adopting AI-driven tactics; baseball utilizes Statcast, and basketball has Second Spectrum. The game's intricate 22-player dynamics pose challenges for modeling. However, TacticAI's 90% approval rate from experts indicates a narrowing gap, signaling a shift towards integrating AI into professional sports, moving from background analytics to tactical applications on the sidelines.
