Audi's Nuvolari, with 1,001 PS, is its quickest car to date, and it isn't electric.
TL;DR
Audi has introduced the Nuvolari, a hybrid supercar boasting 1,001 PS with a 10,000-rpm V8 and three electric motors. Only 499 units will be manufactured, with deliveries commencing in 2027.
Audi has unveiled the Nuvolari, marking the fastest and most powerful production vehicle in its lineup. This hybrid supercar generates 1,001 PS (736 kW) from a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo combined with three axial flux electric motors. A total of 499 units will be produced, starting at a price of €600,000.
The V8 engine alone contributes 800 PS and achieves 10,000 rpm, an area typically reserved for racing engines. Each electric motor adds 110 kW, allowing the powertrain to accelerate the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a maximum speed exceeding 350 km/h.
The Nuvolari is built on the same platform as the Lamborghini Temerario, which generates 920 PS. However, Audi has enhanced the performance and incorporated its own technology, including a system called quattro predictive ride. This system analyzes the steering angle, acceleration, yaw rate, and grip level in real time, synchronizing the electric motors, brakes, and aerodynamic elements as a cohesive unit.
The body of the Nuvolari is primarily constructed from carbon fibre reinforced polymer, utilizing an Audi Space Frame. Active aerodynamic features, inspired by Formula 1, adjust their position to create downforce as needed. A vertical frame made of 64 individually angled tiles directs air through a hidden S-duct.
This model is a plug-in hybrid rather than a fully electric vehicle, which is noteworthy given that Europe's total EV investment has surpassed €200 billion. The anticipated fuel consumption is 11.3 l/100 km combined with 7.8 kWh/100 km of electric consumption, and CO2 emissions are expected to be 270 g/km. These initial figures indicate a focus on performance rather than efficiency.
The timing of this launch is significant. Audi had indicated a shift towards complete electrification, yet the Nuvolari serves as a combustion-driven flagship vehicle, coinciding with the brand's entry into Formula 1 in 2026 as it works to restore its performance reputation. This launch also arrives as international automakers face challenges in China, where local brands command 70% of the market. CEO Gernot Döllner stated that the car exemplifies Audi's commitment to “taking ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ into a new era.”
The name pays tribute to Tazio Nuvolari, a legendary racing driver associated with Audi. Ferdinand Porsche once referred to him as “the greatest driver of the past, the present and the future.” Orders are set to open in late 2026, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2027.
