Apple might introduce the MacBook Ultra in two sizes featuring a unique OLED display.

A recent report has disclosed details about the MacBook Ultra's display size, OLED technology, and expected release timeframe.

Apple’s anticipated MacBook Ultra is emerging as one of the most significant redesigns of the Mac in recent years. A new industry report from research firm Omdia indicates that it could be released sooner than expected. The study focuses on the adoption of OLED technology in laptops, revealing specific insights regarding Apple’s next MacBook.

What screen sizes will the MacBook Ultra feature?

As per the report, Samsung Display is set to start providing OLED panels for Apple’s new MacBook series as early as July 2026, with a launch anticipated in the third quarter of 2026—likely in September, coinciding with the iPhone 18 series and the foldable iPhone Ultra.

The Omdia report mentions two screen sizes for the MacBook Ultra: 14.3 inches and 16.3 inches. The current MacBook Pro models have 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch displays, so the slight increase in size can likely be attributed to thinner bezels and a revamped chassis.

      What differentiates the OLED display?

Apple will not be utilizing the same OLED technology available in most laptops or even in its own iPhone screens. According to Jerry Kang from Omdia, the MacBook Ultra will feature a hybrid OLED structure that incorporates oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology.

This particular combination has not been used in any laptops to date, but resembles the display technology currently employed in the iPad Pro. It has been specifically engineered to consume less power compared to both LTPO and single-layer RGB OLEDs. This is significant because the MacBook Ultra is also anticipated to be notably thinner than the existing MacBook Pro.

To achieve the battery life that its laptops are celebrated for, Apple would need a considerable boost in efficiency. Reportedly, this new display technology is how the company plans to make that happen. The MacBook Ultra is expected to represent a new tier in Apple’s range, positioned above the current MacBook Pro rather than acting as a replacement.

By the end of 2026, Apple’s MacBook lineup could extend from the entry-level Neo to the Ultra, covering a broader spectrum than ever before.

The hidden labor of modern tech support is turning us all into unpaid employees

Every encounter with a chatbot, forum search, and repeated explanation accumulates into a hidden cost on your time.

Recently, I attempted to cancel an order through a popular food delivery app, but I found myself trapped within a frustrating chatbot experience. I couldn't explain my actual problem; I was restricted to tapping preset options, none of which were appropriate for my situation. I repeatedly exited and tried again, hoping the correct answer would be revealed with another wrong menu choice. Eventually, I resorted to Googling how to reach a live representative, feeling foolish for struggling with a simple task. Ironically, the solution was to feign a different inquiry. I’m joking, of course; I know that customers like me aren't really foolish. However, the experience made me feel that way.
