Google will search through your Gmail inbox if you request it while using Drive.
Google is broadening the capabilities of Gemini within Workspace by enabling users to directly pull Gmail conversations into Ask Gemini in Drive, which enhances the AI assistant's access to emails, documents, and folders in a unified workspace environment.
This feature is now generally available to eligible Google Workspace and Google AI subscribers, aiming to assist users in posing more intricate questions while using Google Drive. Instead of toggling between Gmail and Drive to gather information, users can now incorporate entire Gmail threads into Gemini alongside their files and folders to produce context-aware responses.
Gemini is transforming Drive into a more intelligent workplace assistant.
Previously, Ask Gemini in Drive primarily depended on files and folders for reference. With the new update, Gmail threads can also serve as sources, enabling Gemini to analyze conversations, attached documents, and relevant Drive files collectively. Google states that the objective is to offer “a complete view of business context” so users can receive more precise and beneficial AI-generated replies.

The company characterizes Ask Gemini in Drive as an “immersive workspace,” designed for focused work and multi-turn dialogues. This means users can request Gemini to summarize lengthy email discussions, cross-check information between documents and inbox threads, or quickly highlight decisions that may be buried in numerous conversations.
This rollout coincides with tech companies' aggressive push to integrate AI assistants into workplace software to minimize the time spent on information searches. Microsoft has been enhancing similar features through Copilot in Outlook and Office, while Google is progressively embedding Gemini throughout Workspace.
Convenience and privacy concerns arise simultaneously.
For users, this update could significantly enhance Drive's utility as a productivity center. By merging Gmail and Drive into a cohesive searchable knowledge base, Gemini can assist professionals in managing projects more efficiently, particularly in environments where essential information is frequently scattered across various documents and lengthy email threads.

However, this feature might also bring up new worries regarding the level of access AI systems should have to personal or sensitive workplace communications. While Google indicates that the functionality operates only when users intentionally include Gmail threads as sources, the notion of an AI assistant “sifting through” inbox conversations may cause discomfort for some users.
Google mentions that the feature is enabled by default if Gemini for Workspace in Drive is already activated by administrators. End users must also have Workspace smart features activated to utilize Ask Gemini in Drive.
The rollout commenced on June 3, 2026, and is gradually being implemented over a span of up to 15 days. The feature is available for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, AI Expanded Access, and select Education plans.
