      OpenAI's newly introduced dreaming system automatically learns from your chat history and keeps that data updated over time.

      ChatGPT has had the capability to remember things about you in between conversations for a while, but maintaining the accuracy of those memories over time has been a consistent challenge. OpenAI is now launching a redesigned memory system called “dreaming” to tackle this issue, representing the most substantial update to ChatGPT’s memory since the feature debuted in 2024.

      ### How the New System Operates

      OpenAI clarifies that the previous memory feature “depended on strong cues” to store information, requiring users to explicitly request ChatGPT to remember something. This meant that much context was overlooked, leading to once-accurate details—such as future travel plans or temporary preferences—remaining outdated.

      The dreaming system addresses this by working continuously in the background and automatically synthesizing information from your chat history, rather than waiting for you to flag it. It also considers the passage of time; for instance, if you informed ChatGPT that you traveled to Singapore last month, it will no longer assume you are still there. Additionally, OpenAI has introduced a new memory summary page that enables you to review what ChatGPT knows about you, make corrections, and add details manually.

      With the updated memory system, you can examine and guide what ChatGPT remembers through a memory summary, offering greater visibility and control over how context is utilized.

      The company states that the update also enhances how ChatGPT applies your preferences in real-world interactions. If you've noted in past discussions that you are vegetarian or prefer quieter restaurants, the new system can better integrate that context into new conversations without requiring you to repeat yourself.

      ### Availability

      The update is being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US starting today. It will also expand to more countries and reach the Free and Go tiers in the coming weeks. The rollout for the free tier is particularly significant as OpenAI mentions that recent efficiency enhancements have reduced the compute power needed to deliver the feature by around 5x, making a free-tier implementation feasible. This has also allowed the company to double the memory capacity for Plus and Pro users.

      Memory has been one of the top-requested improvements from ChatGPT users, with complaints about inconsistent recall, outdated information, and new memories not saving frequently surfacing on Reddit. Whether dreaming effectively addresses these concerns in actual use, as opposed to in benchmark evaluations, remains to be seen.
