ChatGPT is improving its ability to recall details about your life, making your conversations feel more natural.
OpenAI's new dreaming system automatically learns from your chat history and keeps that information up to date over time.
ChatGPT has previously had the capability to remember details about you across conversations, but maintaining the accuracy of those memories over time has been a notable challenge. OpenAI is now introducing an improved memory system called “dreaming,” which represents the most significant update to ChatGPT’s memory since the feature was introduced in 2024.
How the new system functions
OpenAI notes that the previous memory feature depended on explicit prompts from users to remember information, which led to a lot of context being missed, and details that were once correct, like a planned trip or a temporary preference, couldn’t refresh themselves automatically.
The dreaming system addresses this by functioning in the background and automatically synthesizing information from your chat history instead of waiting for you to point it out. It also takes time into account, so if you informed ChatGPT about traveling to Singapore last month, it will not incorrectly assume that you are still there. OpenAI has added a new memory summary page, allowing you to review what ChatGPT knows about you, make adjustments, and manually include details.
With the updated memory system, you can oversee and direct what ChatGPT retains through a memory summary, offering greater visibility and control over the context it utilizes.
The company states that the update also enhances how ChatGPT incorporates your preferences in practice. If you’ve mentioned being vegetarian or favoring quieter restaurants in prior conversations, the new system is more adept at using that context in new discussions without requiring you to restate it.
Who will receive it and when
The update is currently being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US, beginning today. It will gradually be available in other countries and on the Free and Go tiers in the coming weeks. The rollout for the free tier is particularly noteworthy. OpenAI mentions that recent efficiency enhancements have decreased the computing resources needed for the feature by about 5 times, making the launch on the free tier feasible. This also allowed the company to double the memory capacity for Plus and Pro users.
Memory has been one of the most requested improvements from ChatGPT users, with frequent reports of inconsistent recall, outdated information, and new memories not being retained popping up regularly on Reddit. Whether the dreaming feature effectively resolves those issues in practical use, rather than just in testing scenarios, remains to be determined.

In a related update, teaching games like Battleship can significantly enhance the intelligence of smaller AI models.
By using a Battleship-style approach, researchers have managed to help smaller AI systems improve their information-gathering skills prior to making a move. This resulted in a dramatic improvement in performance for these systems, with one model transitioning from rarely defeating humans to winning most games after modifications were made to its board search strategy.
A new AI system has also emerged that can distinguish between genuine and fake online reviews, achieving surprising accuracy in the process.
Fake reviews pose a significant problem for online shoppers. If you've ever purchased something online based on highly positive reviews only to be let down by an inferior product, you're familiar with the issue. A recent study published in the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology presents an AI-based system capable of detecting fake reviews and tracing their dissemination.
Additionally, Valve has confirmed that Steam Machine will be released this summer, but details concerning its price remain unclear.
Valve has announced that Steam Machine is scheduled to ship this summer, providing PC gamers with a clear launch timeframe for its SteamOS living room PC. However, the price remains a crucial detail that potential buyers need before making a decision regarding its compatibility with their setup.
This announcement coincides with Valve expanding its Verified program to include Steam Machine and Steam Frame. For the Steam Machine, games will be evaluated for default controller support, standard graphics settings, and performance without needing manual configuration. Valve claims the hardware offers approximately six times the power of the Steam Deck but will still operate on SteamOS, with the Steam interface and Proton.
