Brave Origin is a streamlined browser that removes all the unnecessary details, but obtaining it comes at a cost of $60.
Brave Origin eliminates the crypto wallet, AI assistant, rewards program, and other features for a one-time fee of $59.99, but critics argue that these features can already be disabled for free by users.
Brave has established itself as a streamlined, privacy-conscious alternative to Chrome, but over time, it has added features such as a crypto wallet, AI assistant, news feed, and rewards program. In response to user complaints about excess features, the company has introduced a simplified version of its browser called Brave Origin. However, this version is only free for Linux users.
What’s included and what’s removed
Brave Origin removes Brave Rewards, Wallet, Leo AI, News, Talk, VPN, Tor, and several other features. What remains is Brave Shields, the company's built-in ad and tracker blocker.
There are two options for using Origin: 1) As a standalone browser with most features apart from Brave Shields disabled. 2) As an upgrade to the current browser, featuring a new panel that allows users to toggle functions on/off. The browser can be downloaded as a standalone version or as an upgrade to an existing Brave installation. This service comes with a one-time license fee of $59.99, which covers up to 10 devices. Linux users, however, can access this minimalist experience for free.
A paid solution for a self-created issue
The launch has sparked criticism within parts of the Brave community. Some users contend that the company is charging to remove features that were undesirable from the start. Others note that much of what Origin takes away can already be disabled in the free version, leading to questions about what the $60 actually provides.
Supporters argue that most users will likely never adjust those settings, and that Origin offers a cleaner experience in a more user-friendly manner. Whether Origin's price of $60 is justified depends on how much those features inconvenience you and how much faith you have in Brave not adding more features in the future.
