Windows 11 is finally tackling major frustrations with the universal Search feature.

Now, partial terms can reveal compound file names regardless of their position.

If you’ve ever entered a file name in Windows Search but given up midway because you only recalled part of it, Microsoft has a solution for you.

In the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview build, Microsoft has implemented a targeted but genuinely beneficial enhancement to how Windows Search identifies your files. It’s one of those tweaks that makes you question why it wasn't available earlier.

What is Search by Substring, and why is it significant?

Launched on May 29 for both the Experimental and Beta channels, the new feature named Search by Substring offers a straightforward solution.

In the past, finding a file in Windows required you to know the beginning of its name. For instance, typing “april” would not result in showing a file named MeetingNotesApril since Windows only searched the start of more complex file names.

Search by Substring alters this for the better. Enter “april,” and Windows will now display files with that string located anywhere within their names, whether it appears at the beginning, end, or in the middle.

The same principle applies to the content within files. Typing “status” makes a document called ProjectStatusReport immediately accessible.

      Is this actually significant?

For anyone who uses descriptive compound names for their files, such as those working with documents, project directories, or any well-organized file system, the new Search by Substring feature truly is a major advancement.

The previous method required you to remember the exact start of a file name, which is not how human memory functions. This small modification results in a disproportionately large enhancement to quality of life.

The Search by Substring enhancement is part of the Experimental channel with Build 26300.8553 and is also available in the Beta channel with Build 26220.8544. Additionally, this build introduces enhancements to the Start menu, including section-level toggles, a renamed Recommended section now known as Recent, and various size options for the Start menu itself.

Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip aims at the Mac Studio, with Asus and MSI being the first to claim it.

Nvidia has created a compact AI box designed to compete with the Mac Studio. The competition for compact high-performance desktops is intensifying, and Nvidia seems ready to venture into a space long occupied by Apple’s Mac Studio. During Computex 2026, MSI showcased a new mini PC focused on AI, named the MSI EdgeMesa N AI, powered by Nvidia’s latest RTX Spark platform. This launch indicates Nvidia's aspirations to expand AI computing beyond conventional gaming desktops and into compact creator and workstation devices. Additionally, it reflects how PC brands are aggressively pursuing Apple’s successful approach of delivering powerful desktop performance within sleek, minimalist systems.

Asus equips its ProArt P16 and P14 laptops with Nvidia’s robust RTX Spark processor.

The race in AI PCs has primarily revolved around maximizing neural processing capabilities in slimmer laptops. Asus, however, is pursuing a different strategy. Its new ProArt P16 and ProArt P14 creator laptops are designed around Nvidia’s innovative RTX Spark platform, a chip configuration typically found in workstations. This aligns perfectly with their goal. The new ProArt laptops are aimed at creators, developers, and power users who increasingly seek desktop-level AI performance without being confined to a desk.

Asus unveils the world’s first OLED esports monitor and a Color ePaper secondary display.

Gaming monitors have long been in pursuit of one goal: higher refresh rates. Asus has now advanced this quest by introducing what it labels as the world’s first OLED monitor designed specifically for esports players. Under the ROG brand, the new Strix OLED XG259QWPG Ace boasts a compact 24.5-inch display with an impressive 540Hz refresh rate, bringing the rich visuals of OLED technology to a category that has habitually prioritized speed over image quality. However, that’s not the only unique display Asus has revealed. The company also announced a color ePaper monitor aimed at productivity, reading, and reducing eye fatigue. While it may seem like an unusual combination, both products showcase the evolution of display technology beyond traditional LCD screens.
