Apple has set ambitious goals for its smart glasses, eyeing a $200 billion eyewear market with 2.2 billion potential customers, making it a personal priority for Tim Cook.
The tech giant from Cupertino has been developing smart glasses for several years, but if you were expecting to purchase a pair this year, Bloomberg has disappointing news.
Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s smart glasses, codenamed N50, have been delayed beyond their initial schedule. They were originally intended to be announced by the end of 2026 and released in early 2027, but the new target is a launch in late 2027.
Why is Apple lagging behind a market already dominated by Meta?
The delay isn't particularly surprising.
The N50 smart glasses largely rely on a revamped Siri, which has consistently caused delays across the company's product roadmap.
Whether referred to as revamped Siri or Siri 2.0, it's affecting not only the smart glasses but also AirPods with cameras and various other smart home devices that depend on Siri as the main interaction interface.
Meanwhile, Meta has spent two years gaining traction with its AI-enhanced smart glasses, with more announcements expected in that area as early as June.
What is Apple actually developing?
Despite the delays, Apple deserves some recognition for its ambitious product ideas.
The first iteration of Apple’s glasses is set to feature oval-shaped cameras, various frame styles, and distinctive color options. Like all Apple products, they will connect to the iPhone and utilize the company’s ecosystem of over two billion active devices.
In the long run, Apple envisions these glasses evolving into a health device, with future versions possibly integrating augmented reality. However, true AR glasses are not anticipated until the end of this decade.
Apple aims to capture a portion of the $200 billion global eyewear market, specifically targeting the $200 to $500 price segment.
It seems that Apple is following a strategy similar to that used for the Apple Watch with these smart glasses. The company effectively outperformed Fossil and Swatch by creating a tech device that also served as a fashion accessory. However, unlike the Apple Watch, which was among the first mainstream smartwatches, the smart glasses market is already a competitive space led by Meta.

Apple has new Beats headphones on the way, and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has been spotted wearing them.
New over-ear Beats headphones were first seen in an FCC database and then on the head of Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal, who was at Spain's World Cup training camp wearing them in pink.
Although Beats and Apple haven’t officially announced these headphones, the reveal comes from an 18-year-old player sharing photos and a video on Instagram, which received over 1.8 million likes, of him arriving at camp with a pair of unreleased Beats headphones.
In a surprising move, Acer has launched two stylish smart glasses ahead of Computex 2026.
In 2026, the conversation around smart glasses is mostly centered on a few major brands: Meta, Samsung, and Google. However, Acer has quietly entered the market with two new pairs of glasses that appear to be quite practical.
What features does Acer’s wired AR headset offer?
Following the development of smart glasses, it seems Meta is also looking to introduce an all-listening AI pendant.
Meta’s aspirations for smart glasses are well-known. The company has spent the last few years promoting the idea of AI on users' faces. Now, according to a report from The Information, Meta is working on an AI-powered pendant that it plans to start testing within the next year. This wearable would join a growing array of AI hardware, but unlike smart glasses, it may be designed to listen quietly from around your neck.
This concept is familiar; Meta acquired the AI startup Limitless in 2025, whose flagship product was a clip-on microphone called the Pendant, meant to continuously capture conversations and ambient sounds to create searchable transcripts, summaries, and reminders. At the time, the acquisition seemed a strategic investment in AI wearables, and it now appears Meta may be ready to leverage that opportunity.
