BYD's God's Eye technology is challenging Tesla while significantly lowering costs

BYD has delivered another setback to Tesla with its new self-driving package, which comes with a price that puts Tesla's driver-assistance service to shame. The Chinese EV leader has introduced a service package named God's Eye, with chairman Wang Chuanfu stating that BYD’s primary objective is to achieve “zero traffic accidents.”

During a recent press event, he revealed that BYD will take on all compensation and repair costs for accidents that occur while drivers utilize its City Navigation feature, without impacting the user’s insurance premiums in the following year.

BYD is confident in its self-driving technology

The new coverage is tailored for BYD’s God’s Eye A/B systems. This means new owners receive coverage immediately upon delivery, while current owners will be able to access it after updating to the new God’s Eye 5.0 via an over-the-air update. The policy appears to cover at-fault incidents, including repairs to the owner’s vehicle, damage to third-party properties, and personal injuries, provided the system is operated under the stipulated regulations.

Furthermore, there is no need for an additional purchase of “intelligent driving insurance,” no payout limits, and no impact on next year’s commercial insurance premiums. BYD is showing considerable faith in its technology with this commitment. Nonetheless, assisted driving still requires drivers to remain attentive, and BYD is not absolving the driver of their responsibilities.

Pricing is where things get interesting

The most significant aspect here is the price. BYD allows users to upgrade to God’s Eye B for 12,000 Yuan, roughly $1,770. In comparison, Tesla’s similar assisted-driving package in China, now called Tesla Assisted Driving, is priced at 64,000 Yuan, or about $9,400, without a subscription option. This means BYD's upgrade costs about one-fifth of Tesla's price in China.

For context, Tesla’s pricing in the US has also undergone considerable changes. Currently, the company offers FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month, which requires drivers to remain alert. Tesla has transitioned FSD to a subscription-only model for new purchasers, whereas previously US buyers could buy FSD outright for $8,000, down from $12,000 in 2024.

Regardless of how it’s presented, BYD is significantly undercutting Tesla. It is making advanced driving technology more affordable and accessible. The additional commitment underscores BYD’s willingness to build trust with consumers.

Low-cost sodium batteries in China are matching Tesla's performance levels

Researchers have found that commercial sodium-ion batteries produced by Hina are reaching performance standards comparable to Tesla’s batteries, posing new pressure on the cost advantages of lithium-ion technology. Testing of Hina’s cells showed consistent output across a large sample, high power capabilities, and a design similar to Tesla’s battery choices. While the low-cost sodium battery still needs improvements, especially for charging in cold conditions, it suggests a more affordable path for EVs, grid storage, and commercial vehicles that do not require maximum driving ranges.

Tesla seeks to instill confidence in its self-driving technology, but even its own AI trainers are skeptical

Elon Musk has been advocating for a fully autonomous Tesla for nearly a decade, claiming that this future is just around the corner. However, a new investigation by Reuters indicates that even those who are closest to the technology—the ones actually training it—are hesitant to trust it. Hundreds of Tesla employees spend their days reviewing footage from vehicles using Full Self-Driving, witnessing striking incidents involving animals, near misses with children, and instances where Teslas exceed speed limits by 20 to 30 mph. Despite these concerning revelations, Musk continues to assure the public that FSD is ready for full operation.
