XREAL's $299 glasses have made it significantly simpler for casual AR users to enter the market.
X By XREAL Introduces Affordable AR Glasses
XREAL is making strides in the realm of augmented reality glasses by introducing their new sub-brand, X By XREAL, also known as xbx. This initiative aims to provide a more budget-friendly option for those who want a large-screen experience without investing in high-end equipment right away.
The inaugural product from this brand is the a01, a lightweight pair of AR glasses currently available in China, with a launch in the US expected in July at a starting price of $299.
Are AR Glasses Finally Becoming Budget-Friendly?
One of the most compelling aspects of the a01 is its pricing. In its announcement, X By XREAL likened it to the iPhone SE, while others have dubbed it the “MacBook Neo of AR glasses,” providing a useful perspective. The product seeks to be an approachable option in the AR glasses market, making it more accessible for newcomers.
The xbx a01 weighs in at just 62 grams, making it the lightest in its class. It features a 1600-nit HDR10 ultra-bright display, offers 14 brightness settings, and is equipped with dual-layer MicroOLED panels and a specialized image enhancement chip. Users can enjoy 1.07 billion colors, global real-time AI SDR-to-HDR conversion, and a 50-degree field of view, which XREAL claims is like viewing a 147-inch screen from four meters away.
Affordable Yet Unique
The a01 stands out with its design, deviating from the standard black glasses with cables. XREAL incorporates a semi-transparent body and interchangeable front frames, allowing users to customize their look based on their mood or style. The company even suggests that users can 3D print their own front-frame accessories.
However, there are trade-offs. The a01 does not include camera-based 3DoF tracking; it relies instead on software-driven stabilization and anti-shake features. According to the company’s promotional material, the spatial anti-shake algorithm aims to keep images stable during commutes, flights, and high-speed train rides without blurring details or compromising color quality.
While the a01 is not a direct competitor to the Apple Vision Pro, it serves as a convenient portable cinema for phones, handheld consoles, and laptops while traveling, making it a much more attractive option at $299.
