Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphones might undergo a confusing change in naming.
Samsung may be on the verge of renaming its foldable devices, and this change could lead to significant confusion.
Samsung is preparing to unveil two new foldable smartphones in July, and if a recent leak holds true, the company is about to overhaul its naming strategy, which is likely to perplex many consumers.
Tipster Ice Universe reported on Weibo that the device we have referred to as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will be released simply as the Galaxy Z Fold 8. In contrast, the model we anticipated to be the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 will be marketed as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
While it's understandable why Samsung might opt for this new naming approach, it’s clear that it will cause considerable confusion.
Is the name change justifiable?
In my opinion, no. The wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is reportedly equipped with just dual rear cameras and a 4,800mAh battery, whereas the standard Fold 8 (to be renamed Ultra) is expected to feature a triple rear camera setup and a larger battery. Hence, from a specifications standpoint, it's logical for the better-equipped model to receive the Ultra designation.
However, the issue arises for anyone who has followed the Galaxy Z Fold series, as they will expect the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to be a direct upgrade from the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Instead, they will find a wider, passport-style device that represents a completely different form factor. This isn’t an upgrade; it is a distinct product using a familiar name.
Samsung is essentially asking consumers to forget years of brand recognition, which rarely goes well. Many potential buyers may be confused while attempting to make a purchase, and this confusion could easily impact Samsung's sales.
Does the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra deserve its name?
The Ultra designation carries significant expectations, so Samsung needs to deliver. Rumors suggest only minor upgrades, such as improved cameras and a larger battery. Reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 may lack several new features, so Samsung will need to impress us in extraordinary ways to justify the Ultra label.

With iOS 27, Apple will finally allow for alternative casting options beyond AirPlay.
Your iPhone could soon have better compatibility with non-Apple devices.
Apple is reportedly set to introduce one of the most surprising updates to iOS in years: support for third-party wireless casting systems as alternatives to AirPlay. According to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, iOS 27 will enable users in the European Union to select services like Google Cast as their default streaming option for videos, photos, and audio to TVs, speakers, and other connected devices. This change is part of Apple’s efforts to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to limit the control large tech companies have over their platforms and ecosystems.
