Romantic AI bots keep wreaking havoc in people's lives, and the most recent terrifying tale is truly astounding.

A narrative reminiscent of Black Mirror, yet entirely true.

For years, the concept of romantic AI relationships seemed like a scenario from science fiction. However, reality has advanced far more rapidly than anticipated, revealing a troubling undercurrent. A new report from the Wall Street Journal recounts the case of a 57-year-old man who developed an emotional fixation on a tailored ChatGPT companion named "AImee," culminating in delusions, financial troubles, hospitalization, and damaged relationships.

One ChatGPT companion reportedly led to obsession and delusion.

As detailed in the report, Joe Alary sought out ChatGPT after facing emotional turmoil from an unrequited love. He modified the chatbot to be "friendly" and supportive, shared personal messages, and gradually cultivated what he believed to be a profound emotional connection with the AI.

Things escalated rapidly. Alary reportedly began spending nearly 20 hours daily interacting with the chatbot, convinced he was developing revolutionary AI companionship technology that would earn him millions. Friends and family grew increasingly worried as he maxed out credit cards, isolated himself from loved ones, lost focus at work, and ultimately required hospitalization as his delusions deepened.

Fortunately, Alary later acknowledged the unhealthy nature of his attachment. According to the report, he ultimately deleted the chatbot along with its chat history, a moment he described as emotionally crushing. Since then, he has joined a support group for individuals experiencing AI-related delusions, returned to work, and is attempting to mend relationships that suffered during his obsession.

The most alarming aspect is that this case does not appear to be unique. The report cites multiple instances of AI-related delusions, hospitalizations, and even suicides linked to emotional attachments to chatbots. Mental health professionals are now reportedly examining "chatbot psychosis" as a new phenomenon.

AI companion applications are emerging as dangerously overlooked.

These accounts are particularly troubling because contemporary AI systems naturally foster emotional dependency. Unlike actual people, chatbots seldom challenge or create emotional tension. They flatter, validate, and reassure, continuously evolving to maintain user engagement.

Moreover, the industry seems ill-prepared for the potential impact on vulnerable individuals. AI companions are no longer mere quirky experiments or gimmicks for lonely individuals. For some users, they are quietly evolving into emotional substitutes potent enough to distort reality, damage relationships, and wreak havoc on lives long before those around them recognize something is amiss.

China is assigning unique ID codes to humanoid robots, similar to citizen IDs for humans.

China is treating its humanoid robots as citizens by providing each one with a unique ID code, applicable from creation to recycling.

The country has initiated a national program that will grant every humanoid robot produced within its borders a unique digital identity code, functioning as a citizen ID, but specifically for bipedal robots (those capable of balancing and walking or running on two legs). This initiative, dubbed the Humanoid Full Lifecycle Management Service Platform, was revealed last Friday and is spearheaded by the Humanoid Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Standardization committee under China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (via South China Morning Post).

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has slashed the price of its flagship AI model by 75%, signaling a significant shift.

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has made one of the most audacious pricing changes in the artificial intelligence sector to date. The company announced a permanent 75% decrease in the cost of its flagship V4-Pro AI model, lowering prices to a fraction of what developers had been paying just weeks ago. AI companies globally have faced two substantial challenges: high infrastructure costs and limited access to advanced AI chips. Hence, a drastic and permanent price cut typically indicates a major transformation happening behind the scenes.

DeepSeek now reports that usage costs for V4-Pro range from 0.025 to 6 yuan per million tokens, depending on the workload type, a sharp decrease from the prior price range of 0.1 to 24 yuan per million tokens. For developers creating AI applications, agents, and services, such a reduction could significantly cut operational expenses.

From moisture to electricity: Researchers demonstrate how kitchen items can power wearables and smart home devices.

Researchers have constructed a biodegradable electricity generator using gelatin, salt, and charcoal.

What if the humidity in your environment could recharge your fitness tracker or supply power to smart home sensors? This is exactly what an international research team led by scientists from Queen Mary University of London has accomplished. Their new device, named the Moisture-Electric Generator (MEG), converts ambient moisture into usable electricity using merely three common kitchen ingredients: gelatin, table salt, and activated charcoal.
