Android may finally provide a response to the iPad mini, and it features an OLED display as well.
A leaked OnePlus tablet could address the gap in Android's compact flagship market
Compact Android tablets often involve some trade-offs. While smaller models are readily available, most are positioned in the mid-range or budget sectors. When looking for stronger performance in a compact form, options typically shift toward gaming-oriented tablets from brands such as Lenovo and Red Magic.
This makes the recent OnePlus leak noteworthy. According to tipster Abhishek Yadav, OnePlus is developing a compact tablet for global markets featuring an 8.8-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. This tablet is also expected to include LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.1 storage, an 8,000mAh battery, and 67W charging capabilities.
Why this could stand out
While OnePlus already has a flagship tablet called the OnePlus Pad 4, which features a large 13.2-inch IPS LCD screen and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, this rumored device would offer high-end specifications in a size more comparable to the iPad mini.
Apple has yet to introduce OLED technology in the iPad mini, which currently uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD display with IPS technology, while OLED displays are confined to the premium iPad Pro range, including the 2024 M4 model and the upcoming 2025 M5 version.
OLED could be the significant enhancement
While there are powerful compact Android tablets available, most options geared towards performance are primarily gaming devices. Lenovo’s Legion Tab Gen 5 features an 8.8-inch LCD display paired with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and Red Magic’s Astra offers a 9.06-inch OLED panel with Snapdragon 8 Elite. However, neither of these is aimed at competing with the iPad mini in the mainstream market.
OnePlus might be the brand to extend this compact OLED option beyond China. The rumored specifications closely resemble the China-exclusive Oppo Pad Mini, suggesting the device might not be entirely new. Nonetheless, a OnePlus variant could gain more significance with a wider launch. Pricing details are still unknown, but a global rollout may reportedly commence in Q3 2026, with India likely among the initial markets.
