Wireless earbuds might soon recognize you by your heartbeat.

      Biometric authentication has evolved beyond just fingerprints and facial recognition. Researchers are investigating whether earbuds can identify users by detecting the subtle vibrations caused by their heartbeat.

      A recent study published on the arXiv preprint server presents “AccLock,” a passive authentication system that utilizes standard earphone technology to confirm a user's identity. This system operates using built-in accelerometers found in many modern earbuds rather than microphones or voice prompts.

      Your heartbeat could serve as your next password

      This technology captures the vibrations in the ear canal caused by the heartbeat, known as ballistocardiography (BCG) signals. These signals pass through bones and tissues, forming unique patterns for each individual. This distinctiveness is what makes the system particularly intriguing. Once the earbuds identify a user’s BCG signal, they can constantly verify if the same person is still wearing them. If someone else puts on the earbuds, authentication fails automatically.

      In contrast to previous earphone-based authentication methods, AccLock does not require any active user interaction. The entire process operates silently in the background, which may eventually enable actions like unlocking devices, authorizing payments, or accessing smart homes to feel almost effortless.

      The system performs well—until excessive movement occurs

      To enhance accuracy, the researchers implemented a deep learning model and a multi-stage denoising approach to differentiate user-specific heartbeat patterns from environmental noise and general body movements. In tests involving 33 participants, the system achieved false acceptance and false rejection rates of 3.13% and 2.99%, respectively, which is quite promising for a prototype.

      However, excessive movement presents a significant challenge. Activities like walking, talking, or shaking one’s head markedly increased error rates, indicating the system’s difficulties in real-world scenarios. The researchers also evaluated the technology on Apple AirPods and discovered it remained effective despite hardware constraints. While AccLock is not yet ready for commercial release, it offers a vision of a future where your earbuds can recognize you seamlessly before you even unlock your phone.
