Xiaomi's new electric SUV, priced at $34,500, offers a longer range than the Tesla Model Y while being more affordable.

Xiaomi's most affordable YU7 offers a greater range than the Tesla Model Y at a significantly lower price.

Xiaomi's CEO, Lei Jun, clearly stated why the YU7 was not surpassing the Tesla Model Y in sales in China: the starting price was not low enough.

With a price just 10,000 yuan (approximately $1,450) less than that of the Tesla Model Y, the difference was not attractive enough. On the evening of May 21, during Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” launch event, Lei took action (via CarNewsChina).

Presenting the Xiaomi YU7 Standard Edition

The new True Standard Edition is priced at 233,500 yuan, around $34,300, making it 30,000 yuan ($4,350) more affordable than the standard rear-wheel-drive Model Y.

While this price difference should suffice, the more noteworthy figure is the range. The YU7 can travel up to 399 miles on a single charge, in contrast to 368 miles for the equivalent Model Y variant.

In short, Xiaomi is providing increased range at a considerably lower cost, which is a direct challenge in China’s highly competitive EV market.

The internet often urges Xiaomi to “destroy Tesla.” During the event, Lei Jun shared the YU7’s sales figures from its launch up to April. He stated that achieving a “two wins, eight losses” result against the Model Y is quite impressive for a brand new player…

What updates are there under the hood?

The YU7 True Standard Edition features a rear-wheel-drive single-motor system that generates 235 kW, powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery sourced from CATL.

Dimensionally, it retains the mid-to-large SUV dimensions of the YU7 at five meters long. However, it is 253 pounds lighter than the previous standard version, now weighing 4,850 pounds.

As for Xiaomi's timing on this, the company aims to regain lost sales momentum. The YU7 was launched on June 18, 2025, with prices starting under $48,500 and quickly amassed over 200,000 orders in three minutes, creating a waitlist that nearly lasted a year.

That backlog has since been addressed, leading to a slowdown in sales momentum. Last month, the company sold fewer than 10,000 units, a sharp decline from the initial rush, prompting the introduction of the new Standard Edition.

Chinese researchers assert that a solid-state EV battery can charge in just minutes.

Imagine charging your electric vehicle faster than you can order coffee.

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences claim to have developed a new solid-state lithium-metal battery capable of providing extremely high energy density while enduring ultra-fast charging conditions—a combination that the global EV industry has been striving for years to achieve.

The research, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, indicates that the prototype battery achieved an energy density of 451.5 Wh/kg while maintaining stable cycling performance for 700 charge cycles at a 20C charging rate. Practically speaking, this could mean charging and discharging in approximately three minutes.

Stellantis has signed a deal that could benefit Jaguar-Land Rover buyers in the US.

Your future Jaguar might soon be manufactured closer to home.

Stellantis aims to strengthen its presence in the United States through a new collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), marking another significant step in CEO Antonio Filosa’s ongoing restructuring plan. The company has confirmed that both automakers have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore product development opportunities in the US market.

This agreement could potentially allow JLR to utilize Stellantis's manufacturing capabilities in America, helping the British luxury automaker avoid significant import tariffs in one of its largest markets. While neither company has confirmed specific production plans, the partnership suggests a noteworthy shift in how global automakers are navigating rising trade barriers and increasing operational expenses.

Mercedes-AMG GT EV accelerates from 0-60 in 2 seconds, charges at 600kW, and mimics V8 and gear shift sounds.

The AMG GT EV charges from 10 to 80% in just 11 minutes.

Mercedes-AMG has created numerous fast cars, but its newly launched electric GT sounds exceptionally impressive on paper. The recently revealed AMG GT 4-Door EV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 2 seconds, placing it among the quickest production EVs available.

This acceleration is just part of the appeal. Mercedes has also equipped the AMG GT 4-Door EV with 600 kW fast charging capability, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 11 minutes.
