The mobile Edge browser has received a significant upgrade that makes it a strong competitor against Chrome.
Edge mobile becomes more intelligent just prior to Chrome’s significant Gemini update.
Chrome remains the default browser for a large number of smartphone users, but Microsoft’s recent Edge update offers an appealing motive for them to explore alternatives.
Microsoft has introduced an important Copilot update for Edge on both desktop and mobile platforms. This rollout occurs ahead of Google’s Chrome upgrade powered by Gemini for Android, anticipated in June, providing Edge an opportunity to differentiate itself on smartphones before Chrome's upcoming AI advancements.
The update is also being implemented on Edge desktop, where Copilot can assist with managing open tabs and browsing history. However, the mobile update may prove to be more beneficial for daily use, as managing multiple tabs can be more challenging on a smaller screen.
What are the key new features in Edge mobile?
The most advantageous enhancement is Copilot's capability to reason across open tabs on mobile. This allows users to request Edge to compare information across various pages instead of manually navigating between tabs.
This feature could be beneficial for routine activities such as trip planning, comparing mobile devices, reviewing restaurant choices, researching purchases, or understanding various articles. I tested the feature, and it was straightforward to use. Edge allows you to select which tabs Copilot should use for reference or type @all to include all open tabs as context for inquiries, comparisons, or planning.
Another helpful addition is Journeys, which is now available on the Edge mobile app following its debut on desktop. It categorizes browsing history into topic-based cards that include summaries and recommended next steps, enabling users to revisit unfinished searches without sifting through their history or reopening various tabs. For those who begin planning something on their phone and forget their progress, this could be one of the more functional upgrades.
Is it worth trying Edge mobile before Chrome's Gemini update?
Voice and Vision features are also being introduced on mobile, enabling users to articulate what they see on their screens. The new tab page has been revamped to consolidate chat, search, and browsing into a single, more organized starting point.
While Chrome may still be the browser of choice for most Android users, Edge now has features that Chrome has yet to offer on mobile. Its Copilot functionalities are already available, while Chrome's significant Gemini upgrade is anticipated next month. After exploring the new Edge features, I am genuinely considering adopting it as my default mobile browser.

Ultra-thin transparent solar cells promise invisible charging for wearables, vehicles, and homes.
Car windows and smart glasses could potentially harness sunlight in the future.
A novel type of nearly invisible solar cell may enable everyday glass surfaces to produce electricity, which could include car windows and sunroofs, smart glasses, wearables, building facades, and home windows. Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have created ultrathin transparent perovskite solar cells that are about 10,000 times thinner than a human hair and roughly 50 times thinner than traditional perovskite solar cells. The research team, led by Associate Professor Annalisa Bruno, has published their findings in ACS Energy Letters (via TechXplore).
After a misstep with Siri, Apple intends to feature AI agents on the App Store.
One issue involves financial commitments where Apple hasn't ruled out charging. The other challenge pertains to managing AI agents, which Apple struggles to regulate. WWDC needs to address both.
Apple is currently facing challenges related to Siri that are unrelated to the assistant itself. With WWDC 2026 approaching, The Information reports that the company is actively seeking developers to incorporate their applications with the revamped Siri coming in iOS 27. The updated Siri is powered by App Intents, an API that allows Siri to perform actions within third-party apps without needing to open them manually, which seems quite advantageous. Nonetheless, some of the world’s largest developers are hesitant not due to complexity, but because Apple has left the possibility of future charges open.
EV batteries can gain a significant 23% increase in lifespan with a little boost from AI, according to research.
Finding a balance between rapid charging and battery longevity has always been a challenge for EV battery technology. Charging too quickly can degrade the battery, while slower charging can lead to dissatisfaction.
Researchers Meng Yuan from Victoria University of Wellington and Changfu Zou from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden appear to have solved this longstanding issue using a deep reinforcement learning AI technique, and the results seem very promising.
