The forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide from Samsung may disappoint with its "modest" camera specifications.
Leaked specifications indicate that the main camera of the Fold 8 Wide will not be on par with the standard Fold 8.
Samsung is set to make waves in the foldable market this July with the anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, an additional extra-wide version of its flagship foldable, expected to launch alongside the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, if you were expecting premium camera specifications for the wide variant, you might want to adjust your expectations.
No Ultra-level main camera
A recent leak from GalaxyClub and SamMobile reveals that the Fold 8 Wide will have a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, along with a 50MP f/1.9 ultrawide camera. While these specifications are decent, they do not reach the level of Samsung's Ultra flagship.
To provide context, the main camera of the Fold 8 Wide is equivalent to that of the base Galaxy S26, not the S26 Ultra. Given that the standard Fold 8 is anticipated to have a 200MP main camera, similar to Samsung’s Ultra flagship, the Wide’s primary camera represents a significant downgrade.
The ultrawide camera tells a different story, though. Both the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Wide are expected to share the same ultrawide component found in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, so the Wide is not compromising on every front. However, the selfie cameras might not see any changes, as both devices are expected to be equipped with two 10MP cameras—one on the cover screen and another inside.
Samsung’s Fold and Flip series allows users to take selfies with the rear cameras, using the cover display as a viewfinder. This feature will continue to be available in the upcoming models, so the absence of upgrades to the selfie cameras shouldn’t be a dealbreaker.
Smaller battery, lower cost
The leak also indicates that the Fold 8 Wide will have a smaller battery compared to the standard Fold 8, coming in at 4,800mAh versus the Fold 8’s 5,000mAh capacity. On the positive side, this is still an improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 4,400mAh battery.
Under the hood, both models are expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Additionally, the standout color for this year's launch is rumored to be dark green, replacing the blue that was highlighted in the Fold 7’s promotion.
Considering the compromises in camera and battery performance, the Wide is anticipated to be offered at a more affordable price than the standard Fold 8, although specific pricing details have not yet been disclosed. More information is likely to emerge as we approach the launch, which is expected to occur in July.
