Meta claims that WhatsApp is now the most secure app for chatting… with AI.
WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature called "Incognito Chat" with Meta AI, aimed at enhancing privacy in conversations. This mode allows users to engage in completely private chats with the assistant, ensuring that messages are not stored and vanish when the chat is closed. Meta claims that no one, including itself, can access the content of your messages.
How the private Meta AI chat functions
Increasingly, individuals are seeking AI support for personal topics such as financial matters, health issues, or sensitive work dilemmas. Upon the rollout of this feature, users will notice a new icon in their Meta AI chat that initiates a private session. Messages will disappear once the app is closed or the device is locked.
Meta AI will lose all context from the conversation once the session concludes, meaning every incognito chat will commence anew. This feature will be gradually available on WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app in the coming months.
An additional feature being developed is Side Chat, which enables users to privately pose questions to Meta AI within a group conversation, keeping them hidden from other participants.
Is Meta AI truly secure for private chats?
This is the same Meta AI associated with a tragic incident involving a man with cognitive impairments who mistakenly believed the chatbot was a real person and went to meet her. Meta has faced lawsuits from five major publishers, accusing it of unlawfully copying millions of books and journal articles to train its Llama model. Elsevier, a science publisher, has also joined a class-action lawsuit claiming that Meta scraped copyrighted research without authorization. How this impacts your willingness to share personal inquiries with Meta AI is a personal choice.
In the meantime, Meta is also launching WhatsApp Plus, a paid subscription model that offers features that other apps like Telegram provide for free.

The Fire Phone was a significant flop that tarnished Amazon's attempts to enter the smartphone market. More than ten years later, Amazon seems to be considering reentry into the mobile sector, this time with an AI focus. However, it does not appear to be planning a straightforward follow-up to its previous smartphone. In an interview with the Financial Times, Amazon devices chief Panos Panay emphasized that the company has no intention of simply creating another phone, acknowledging that mobile technology is evolving, and new AI-driven designs may redefine what is regarded as a phone.
