The Android Show 2026: Updates on Gemini Intelligence, Googlebook, Android 17, and more.
Each year, Google launches its Android announcements in a distinct pre-show, held the week before its annual I/O conference. This year was no exception, as The Android Show: I/O Edition proved to be much more than just a teaser.
Google arrived well-prepared, showcasing a plethora of software and a significant hardware announcement that caught everyone off guard. Let's delve into the highlights, which include an extensive AI integration, a long-needed security enhancement, a redesign of Android Auto that seems aimed at 2026, and a completely new category of laptops.
One thing is evident: Google aspires to become the premier name in personalized AI, not only for businesses but also for the individual unlocking their phone at 7 AM. Whether it’s through Gemini Intelligence or a laptop centered around Google’s AI platform, all the announcements made during the Android Show are bound to be a concern for Apple’s AI division.
Gemini Intelligence: AI is now an operational layer rather than an app
The standout announcement at The Android Show 2026 was Gemini Intelligence. This term encompasses the most advanced AI functionalities, serving as an intelligent interface between Google’s various operating systems and the end-users.
The primary concept of Gemini is to perform low-stakes, multi-step tasks either actively or passively, allowing users to focus on more important activities. For example, if you have a grocery list in your notes app, you can activate Gemini and instruct the AI to create a delivery cart with items from a specific app, which you can purchase later.
Leveraging on-screen awareness and control, Gemini Intelligence will add all listed items to your cart but will not place the order itself, as doing so could involve entering sensitive banking details. This is a deliberate measure to ensure Gemini only undertakes necessary tasks and refrains from making decisions for you.
At present, this AI layer has access to both native and third-party applications related to food delivery, ridesharing, and travel. Whether it performs as intended or encounters issues during its automated sessions will be revealed this summer when Gemini Intelligence launches on the Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel 10 series.
It will also be available on Wear OS, Android Auto, and Android XR, but those releases will come later in the year.
Among the other impressive aspects of Gemini Intelligence is a more advanced Autofill feature that can extract pertinent details from your connected apps (such as Gmail and Calendar) to fill out forms in Chrome (or other platforms). This feature is optional, so you can choose to try it out or opt-out if it doesn't suit you.
Google’s Gboard now includes a new feature called Rambler, which enhances your voice dictation by removing awkward phrasing, pauses, and filler words in real-time. More intriguingly, it can handle mid-sentence switches to another language.
Gemini in Chrome for Android (based on Gemini 3.1) introduces a contextual chatbot capable of summarizing, comparing, and researching information across any webpage. An additional auto-browsing feature can assist in finding a parking spot during events, though it will only be available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Both features require Android 12 or higher and will launch at the end of June. Additionally, Google is introducing Nano Banana 2 to Chrome on Android, and the Gemini Intelligence experience will also feature “Create My Widget,” a widget builder that uses natural language to allow users to describe their desired widget functionalities.
Feature summary:
- Gemini Intelligence (core): Agentic AI layer across Android, Wear OS, Auto, XR, Googlebooks – launching summer 2026, starting with Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10.
- Autofill: Pulls details from connected apps to fill forms in Chrome – optional, arriving summer 2026.
- Gboard Rambler: Optimizes voice dictation, removes filler words, supports mid-sentence language switching – summer 2026.
- Gemini in Chrome (Gemini 3.1): Contextual chatbot on webpages, connects to Gmail and Calendar – end of June, for Android 12+ users.
- Auto-browsing in Chrome: Manages tasks like finding parking near events – end of June, exclusive to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
- Nano Banana 2: AI image generation and customization in Chrome – TBA.
- Create My Widget: Crafts custom home screen widgets and Wear OS Tiles via natural language – summer 2026.
Googlebook: Chromebooks infused with Gemini Intelligence
Engineers at Google have decided that Gemini Intelligence should extend beyond Android phones, Wear OS devices, or Android Auto on car dashboards. They aim to incorporate the agentic AI experience into Chromebooks, introducing a new category of AI-integrated devices called Googlebooks.
The Googlebook is the first laptop designed specifically for Gemini Intelligence. It's engineered for top-tier performance, built with Gemini at its core and perfectly synchronized with your Android phone. It will be available this fall.
The proposal includes close integration between Android and laptops, something Google has struggled
