iPhone users might soon have access to the customizable Camera app they've been seeking.
The iPhone Camera app has typically been straightforward, sometimes overly so. While this simplicity appealed to a large audience, it seemed to lag behind its Android counterparts. However, Apple may be preparing to offer users enhanced control over what appears on their screens.
According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is planning a significant update to the Camera app’s interface that will enable users to personalize the row of controls at the top of the viewfinder. This update will involve more than just rearranging existing user interface elements; it will also introduce new "widgets."
How widgets will function in the new Camera app
The app will continue to launch with the familiar default controls, including toggles for resolution, night mode, flash, and Live Photos. The key change is that users will have the option to switch to an "advanced" layout or create their own control set.
Each shooting mode will reportedly have a unique widget configuration. This means that Photo mode, Video mode, and other camera modes can each feature their own distinct shooting tools rather than a single, static interface across the entire app.
According to Gurman, users will be able to select widgets from a transparent "Add Widgets" tray that will slide up from the bottom of the Camera app. While this may seem like a minor modification, it could make the app feel more user-friendly for those who often navigate through menus for specific controls.
Enhancing user control
The advanced tray in Photo mode is said to include controls for depth-of-field and exposure, categorized into sections such as basic, manual, and settings. Users will also be able to add timer and photographic style controls. Additionally, Apple is introducing new grid and level options within the Camera app, making composition tools more easily accessible without having to go through the Settings app.
A further adjustment involves relocating the button that displays all available controls, moving it from the top-right corner of the Camera interface to a new spot next to the shutter button. This shift aims to give users more flexibility, which could be beneficial for enthusiasts desiring to explore various shooting techniques with their iPhones.
Siri is also getting an upgrade
A notable enhancement appears to be the integration of Siri. The revamped Camera app may feature a Siri mode alongside Photo, Video, and other capture options. This mode is expected to utilize Apple’s Visual Intelligence capabilities to assist in identifying plants, translating text, and recognizing objects or scenes through the camera. Essentially, the Camera app could also serve as an AI-powered visual tool, aligning with recent speculations about AI enhancing the photography experience on the iPhone.
Apple has typically maintained a clean and user-friendly interface for the iPhone Camera app, allowing casual users to stick with the default settings. However, those with more advanced needs could benefit significantly from this update.
