      iPhone users might soon have the customizable Camera app they've been looking for.

      The iPhone Camera app has always been quite basic, which, while user-friendly for the general public, has left it trailing behind Android alternatives. However, it seems Apple is finally set to provide users with enhanced control over the app's interface.

      As reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a significant update to the Camera app's interface that will allow users to personalize the control options displayed at the top of the viewfinder. This update will not only involve rearranging existing UI components but will also introduce new "widgets."

      How widgets will function in the updated Camera app

      The app will still launch with the familiar standard controls, including the usual options for resolution, night mode, flash, and Live Photos. The key enhancement is that users will now be able to choose between an “advanced” layout or create their own set of controls.

      Each shooting mode is expected to have its own specific widget configuration. This means that Photo, Video, and other camera modes can feature unique shooting tools rather than using a single, fixed interface throughout the app.

      According to Gurman, users will have the ability to select widgets from a transparent “Add Widgets” tray that will slide up from the bottom of the Camera app. While this may seem like a minor adjustment, it could make navigation more intuitive for those who frequently search through menus for particular controls.

      Empowering users with greater control

      The advanced tray in Photo mode is said to include controls for depth-of-field and exposure, with widgets sorted into categories such as basic, manual, and settings. Users will also have the option to incorporate controls for the timer and photographic styles. Additionally, Apple is set to introduce new grid and level options within the Camera app, making composition tools more accessible without needing to navigate through the Settings app.

      Another interface adjustment involves relocating the button that displays all available controls. According to reports, Apple plans to shift this button from the top-right corner of the Camera interface to a new spot on the right side of the shutter button. This shift will provide users with more flexibility and could be particularly useful for photography enthusiasts looking to experiment with various shooting techniques on their iPhones.

      Siri’s involvement in the mix

      A notable addition seems to be the inclusion of a Siri mode in the updated Camera app alongside Photo, Video, and other capture options. This mode is expected to utilize Apple’s Visual Intelligence features to assist in identifying plants, translating text, and recognizing objects or scenes through the camera. This means the Camera app could also function as an AI-powered visual tool, aligning with recent speculations regarding AI's role in enhancing the iPhone’s photography features.
