Grok Voice Mode has now launched on CarPlay, in case you like conversing with an outspoken AI while driving.
An unfiltered AI assistant, now available in your car.
Grok has officially taken a seat in your car. xAI has launched Grok Voice Mode for Apple CarPlay, enabling drivers to interact with Elon Musk’s famously direct AI assistant directly from their dashboard. This could be either thrilling or somewhat unsettling, depending on how much excitement you seek in traffic.
What is Grok Voice Mode on CarPlay capable of?
After hinting at the feature for some time, xAI has officially introduced Grok Voice Mode for Apple CarPlay, allowing users to engage in full voice interactions with the AI assistant while driving. This feature is now active in the latest update of the Grok iPhone app and can be accessed directly through CarPlay.
Users can ask questions, brainstorm ideas, gather quick information, or simply have casual conversations with Grok hands-free while driving. However, unlike Tesla’s more integrated version of Grok, the CarPlay option is somewhat restricted. It does not have the capability to control vehicle functions such as climate or navigation, and users must manually open the app instead of activating it with a wake word like “Hey Grok.”
Nonetheless, this marks a significant expansion for xAI. Previously, Grok was mostly available in Tesla vehicles. Expanding it to CarPlay instantly connects it with millions of iPhone users across a wide variety of cars.
Your next passenger could be an AI troublemaker.
The competition among AI chatbots has officially extended to CarPlay. With Apple allowing third-party voice assistants on the platform, applications like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and now Grok are all vying to be the AI companions drivers engage with.
What sets Grok apart is its personality. Unlike most assistants that maintain a calm and neutral demeanor, Grok adopts a sarcastic, opinionated, and intentionally disorderly approach. While this may seem entertaining in theory, having an internet-style AI personality accompanying you during traffic jams could represent the future of driving—or could lead to some very peculiar commutes.
