Supercell has acquired Metacore, while Tencent enhances its footprint in the international casual gaming sector.
This week, Supercell announced that it has fully acquired Metacore along with its prominent game Merge Mansion, a move that has garnered attention throughout the global gaming industry and further emphasized Tencent’s developing strategy in the casual gaming arena.
Since Tencent obtained a majority ownership in Supercell for approximately $8.6 billion in 2016, the Finnish studio has continued to operate with significant autonomy. Rather than integrating Supercell into a conventional hierarchical organization, Tencent has permitted the company to uphold its model of small teams and high independence—an approach largely credited with the enduring success of titles like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars.
In this context, the acquisition of Metacore is viewed not as an isolated transaction but as a strategic enhancement to Supercell’s wider portfolio. Unlike Supercell’s main competitive titles, Merge Mansion aligns more with the casual and light-midcore category, merging gameplay mechanics with narrative-driven progression and decoration elements. The game has exceeded 60 million downloads and generated over $600 million in total revenue, making it one of the top successes in the global merge genre. Additionally, games in this category typically attract a larger percentage of female players and older casual gamers, broadening Supercell’s audience beyond its usual competitive player demographic.
The acquisition also mirrors a larger trend in the mobile gaming sector, where growth in casual and hybrid-casual genres continues to surpass more traditional hardcore segments. For Tencent, the strategic importance lies not only in acquiring another popular title but also in enhancing their exposure to long-lasting casual experiences that can thrive through ongoing operations and content updates.
This deal illustrates how competition in the global gaming market is increasingly focused on the depth of portfolios, live-service operations, and long-term user retention, rather than depending solely on individual breakthrough hits. As Supercell integrates Metacore into its publishing and operational framework, global stakeholders will be observing if Merge Mansion can transform into another sustainable evergreen franchise within Tencent’s global gaming portfolio.
