Supercell purchases Metacore, while Tencent enhances its foothold in the worldwide casual gaming sector.
This week, Supercell announced that it has fully acquired Metacore and its flagship game, Merge Mansion. This deal has garnered attention in the global gaming industry and underscores Tencent's shifting strategy in the casual gaming market.
Since Tencent purchased a majority stake in Supercell for approximately $8.6 billion in 2016, the Finnish studio has been allowed to operate with considerable independence. Instead of integrating Supercell into a conventional top-down model, Tencent has permitted the company to preserve its small-team, high-autonomy development approach—an aspect often credited with sustaining popular long-life titles like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars.
In this context, the acquisition of Metacore is perceived more as a strategic enhancement to Supercell’s extensive portfolio rather than a separate transaction. Unlike Supercell's primary competitive games, Merge Mansion is aligned more with the casual and light-midcore segment, combining merge gameplay with narrative-driven progress and decor systems. The game has achieved over 60 million downloads and generated more than $600 million in total revenue, marking it as one of the major successes in the global merge genre. Titles in this category tend to attract a higher proportion of female players and older casual audiences, extending Supercell’s reach beyond its usual competitive gamers.
Additionally, the deal signifies a wider transformation occurring in the mobile gaming sector, characterized by growth in casual and hybrid-casual genres that surpasses that of the traditional hardcore segments. For Tencent, the strategic advantages include not just adding another successful title but also enhancing its presence in sustainable long-life casual experiences supported by ongoing live operations and content updates.
The acquisition highlights how competition in the global gaming market is increasingly focused on portfolio diversity, live-service operations, and long-term user retention, rather than relying solely on standout hits. As Supercell incorporates Metacore into its publishing and live operations framework, industry observers will be keen to see if Merge Mansion can develop into another enduring franchise within Tencent’s global gaming lineup.
