This Emmy-nominated science fiction series is among the three overlooked Prime Video shows to check out this weekend (May 2-3).

      These three Prime Video series share a common trait: they are all exceptional, sadly underappreciated, and did not attract the viewership they warranted. The stories feature a flawed spy who confronts his trauma through folk music, a woman recovering from a car accident who grapples with whether she possesses a gift or is losing her grip, and a small town in Ohio that houses a machine subtly altering its surroundings.

      Prime Video has crafted something remarkably unique with these shows but seemingly neglected to promote them; nevertheless, they are definitely worth watching.

      John Tavner is an intelligence agent tasked with preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. His cover involves working at a Midwestern industrial piping company. While this premise may sound like a typical spy thriller, Patriot stands out as one of the oddest, funniest, and most underrated series on Prime Video.

      John navigates his deteriorating mental health by writing and performing folk songs, which serve as a sort of Greek chorus reflecting the turmoil surrounding him. The humor is dry, the plot is absurd, and the emotional weight is profoundly impactful. The show ran for two seasons and, despite an IMDB score of 8.2, was canceled, leading to ongoing frustration from its devoted fans.

      Undone (2019–2022)

      Undone exemplifies the type of Prime Video series that makes one wonder why more animated shows aren't produced in this manner. Utilizing rotoscoping—a technique where animators trace over live-action footage frame by frame—the series creates an experience akin to a waking dream.

      Rosa Salazar stars as Alma, a young Mexican American woman who survives a car wreck and begins to perceive time in a non-linear fashion. Her deceased father starts to appear, requesting her assistance. The show maintains an intriguing ambiguity regarding whether Alma is gifted or undergoing a psychotic episode, which is precisely where its strength lies. It received an IMDB rating of 8.2 but still hardly made a mark in mainstream discussions.

      Tales from the Loop (2020)

      Inspired by the artwork of Swedish artist Simon Stalenhag, this underappreciated series on Prime Video is truly one of a kind. Set in a small Ohio town that sits atop a mysterious scientific facility known as the Loop, each episode follows a different resident whose life subtly connects with the inexplicable.

      There are no antagonists, no chase scenes, and minimal explanations. Instead, the show provides a rich atmosphere, a sense of yearning, and a quietly building grief that resonates long after the final credits. It garnered two Emmy nominations and an IMDB score of 7.4 yet somehow went largely unnoticed.
