Athena aims to introduce agentic AI into the semiconductor manufacturing environment.

In summary: Athena Technology Solutions, an MES integrator located in Fremont with approximately 120 staff members, has introduced FabOrchestrator, an AI-driven platform for manufacturing that automates reporting, support tickets, system modeling, and code generation specifically for semiconductor and electronics factories. Developed in collaboration with Bangalore's LLM at Scale.AI, it integrates LLM functionality with the Siemens Opcenter and Critical Manufacturing MES platforms that Athena deploys.

Athena Technology Solutions, a Fremont-based MES integrator employing around 120 people, has unveiled FabOrchestrator, claiming it to be the manufacturing sector's inaugural "Agentic AI Foundry." This platform aims to streamline reporting, support tickets, system modeling, and code generation within semiconductor and electronics factories.

Created in partnership with LLM at Scale.AI, a Bangalore-centric enterprise AI company, FabOrchestrator incorporates large language model capabilities to enhance the manufacturing execution systems Athena implements for its clients. The assumption is that the agentic AI model, transforming software development and customer support, can also be applied within the highly specialized, data-intensive setting of a production fab.

      What FabOrchestrator offers

The platform comprises four main components. FabInsight enables factory engineers to query production data in straightforward English, providing reports and analyses without the need for SQL or multiple dashboards. An AI Support Engineer automates routine MES support tickets, forwarding complex issues to human engineers. A Modeling Agent responds to queries regarding MES configuration and guides teams through system upgrades. A Back-end Agent creates code snippets to expedite MES implementation.

While none of these features are groundbreaking individually, with natural-language data querying, automated ticket management, and AI-assisted code generation being offered by numerous companies across various sectors, Athena's goal is to tailor these functionalities specifically for manufacturing execution. This is crucial, as the industry has unique data structures, workflows, and domain knowledge that generic AI tools often fail to address reliably.

“This marks a significant progression for the MES ecosystem,” remarked Senthil Ranganathan, founder and CEO of Athena. Ranganathan established the company in 2011 and has over twenty years of experience in manufacturing systems, spanning the disk drive, semiconductor, and solar industries.

      The MES landscape

Manufacturing execution systems serve as the fundamental software infrastructure for contemporary factories. They monitor each wafer, component, and assembly throughout the production cycle, documenting what transpired, when, by which machine, and under what conditions. In semiconductor fabs, where a single chip may undergo hundreds of processing steps over several weeks, MES data is essential and abundant.

The challenge Athena is addressing is that deriving value from this data typically necessitates specialized expertise. Crafting reports requires familiarity with the MES data model, configuring the system for new products involves navigating intricate modeling rules, and troubleshooting entails understanding which of thousands of parameters could be significant. These activities consume engineering hours that could otherwise enhance yield or throughput.

Athena collaborates as an implementation partner for Siemens Opcenter and Critical Manufacturing, two key MES platforms in the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing sector. Its business revolves around deploying, customizing, and supporting these systems. FabOrchestrator seeks to integrate AI into this existing expertise, transforming the domain knowledge of its consultants into software solutions instead of billable hours.

      The collaboration

The AI foundation of FabOrchestrator is provided by LLM at Scale.AI, a Bangalore-based firm established in 2023 that focuses on multi-agent orchestration for enterprise applications. The company claims to serve clients such as JTC, CBRE, JLL, Cushman and Wakefield, Johnson Controls, and the State of California, mainly within facilities management and real estate. Its research collaborations include institutions like MIT, UC Davis, and NTU Singapore.

This partnership benefits both parties. LLM at Scale.AI gains access to manufacturing expertise and a customer base that would be challenging to reach on its own, while Athena secures an AI platform without the need to develop one from the ground up. A critical concern, however, is whether this combination can deliver reliable performance on a factory floor, as mistakes in data or process can lead to significant financial losses.

      Market positioning

Athena enters a competitive market also targeted by larger corporations. According to Microsoft's industry blog, 65% of manufacturers plan to adopt AI-powered MES by 2026. Major industrial software companies like Infor and Siemens are integrating agentic functionalities into their platforms. Recently, Siemens acquired Canopus AI to enhance semiconductor metrology, while NVIDIA is promoting its manufacturing AI solutions through its Isaac and Omniverse platforms.

For a company like Athena, which generates around $8 million in revenue, competing with organizations that have vastly greater resources poses a challenge. However, it can be argued that MES implementation is highly specialized work, and larger platform vendors have traditionally struggled to offer the in-depth, factory-level expertise that smaller integrators can provide. If FabOrchestrator can effectively decrease the engineering time needed for MES reporting, configuration, and support, it tackles a genuine problem
