Google has released a new Android Canary build, featuring a variety of user interface changes.
Android Canary build 2604 has been released, featuring small, subtle, and quite pleasant changes.
Google has introduced Android Canary build 2604 (ZP11.260320.007), which includes a few new experimental features. First, it's important to note that Canary builds are not intended for regular use; they may be prone to bugs and instability, and the features in these builds might not necessarily be included in the final stable version.
If you’re a developer looking to experiment with new builds and stay ahead of upcoming updates, Canary is ideal for you. However, if you're an average Android user, it is advisable to install it only on a secondary device and not on your main Android phone.
Android Canary 2604 is now available for those who enjoy cutting-edge experiences. As always, this build is highly experimental, and changes are to be expected. For those interested, here are some of the changes I've observed.
This release supports system images for numerous Pixel devices, ranging from Pixel 8 to Pixel 10 Pro, so a majority of recent Pixel owners will be able to use it.
So, what’s new?
As reported by Google’s Mishaal Rahman, there are two new UI updates being tested with this build.
The first update relates to the notification shade. After clearing all notifications, instead of displaying “No notifications,” your phone will show a “You’re all caught up” message. This detail adds a more human touch and is more pleasant to read.
The second change pertains to the app shortcuts menu. When you long-press on an app icon, you’ll find that the shortcuts menu is now collapsed by default. Tapping to expand the shortcuts will cause the actions menu to automatically collapse.
This adjustment aims to streamline the interface and reduce clutter, particularly for apps offering multiple options at once. However, it does introduce an additional step for users who rely on shortcuts, as they will need to tap to expand the menu first.
Will these alterations be included in the stable version of Android?
That’s the uncertainty with Canary builds. There are no guarantees; it will depend on user feedback regarding these features.
If you wish to experiment with these updates on your phone, keep in mind that flashing a Canary build means you cannot revert to a stable build without performing a full data wipe. Therefore, ensure you're certain before proceeding with the installation.
