      Acer has announced the launch of the Swift Air 16 ultrabook in Russia. The main feature of the model is a 16-inch OLED screen in a metal chassis, which weighs only 1.1 kg. The manufacturer calls it "a new standard of mobility," but let's take a look at what it actually offers without the hype.

      Metal that weighs almost nothing

      The chassis is made from a magnesium-aluminum alloy. As a result, the 16-inch laptop weighs 1099 grams. For comparison, some 13-inch models are heavier. The device is 15.9 mm thick. The lid can be opened with one hand, the hinge is sturdy, and the matte surface does not collect fingerprints. Overall, the engineers have done a great job.

      A screen for those who love to watch and count pixels

      The Swift Air 16 features an AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. The 16:10 aspect ratio provides 10% more vertical space than standard widescreens. This means that in a text editor, you'll see a couple of extra lines, and in code, you won't have to scroll every five seconds. The manufacturer promises 95% coverage of DCI-P3 and deep black colors. The glossy finish adds vibrancy to the image, but on a bright day, you will likely need to find some shade.

      What's inside and why they stuffed it with neural networks

      The new model uses AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processors as its "brain." Two versions are available: Ryzen AI 5 330 or Ryzen AI 7 350. In addition to regular cores, they have a separate neural processing unit (NPU) with a power of 50 TOPS. In practice, this means that the laptop can process AI tasks faster on-site without sending your data to the cloud. For example, it can blur backgrounds during video calls or assist in photo editing. It sounds like an "intelligent partner," but in reality, it's just a speedy assistant that doesn't ask unnecessary questions.

      It has 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an SSD storage of 512 GB or 1 TB. There are enough ports: the chassis includes two USB-C, one USB-A, HDMI 1.4, and a headphone jack. Wi-Fi 6e and Bluetooth 5.4 are also included. The infrared FHD camera with a physical shutter allows you to log in using facial recognition via Windows Hello without worrying about someone spying on you.

      About battery life and who needs all this

      The battery is 50 Wh. The manufacturer claims up to 13 hours of video playback. In practice, if you don't play 4K videos at full brightness, the laptop is likely to last through a workday. Fast charging via USB-C is also available.

      Such a device may be useful for travelers and managers who constantly carry a laptop and are tired of excess weight, designers and video editors who value color coverage and a large screen but don't want to carry a huge and heavy laptop. Developers who appreciate vertical screen space will also find it appealing. Additionally, it suits anyone who wants to experiment with local neural networks without purchasing an expensive workhorse.

      Overall, the Acer Swift Air 16 is lightweight, sufficiently powerful, and has a good screen. No magic, just a successful combination of specifications without trying to sell you a "revolution." And it really does weigh about as much as a medium-sized cat.
